This three-page story opens with Usagi greeting someone out of frame.
Seen in flashback, Usagi recounts their first meeting together many years
past resting at a military encampment after the first day of fighting at the
battle of the burning plain. It turns out the man Usagi is speaking to was an
ashigaru (foot soldier), whom Usagi noticed carving ornaments called netsuke.
The soldier, Ogawa, had just finished carving a tortoise as a good luck charm
to protect him in battle, and Usagi asked to take a look at it. As Usagi
examined the luck charm, enemy forces attacked, and Usagi was not able to
return the charm to Ogawa.
Finally, Usagi explains that is the reason for his visit, to return the luck
charm, and we see he is speaking to Ogawa's grave. He leaves the charm on top
of the grave marker, bows, and departs.
