Kitsune, doing as ever what she can to get by, (Neh?) finds a
letter that someone must have 'dropped'. This causes all sorts of
misunderstandings and the local constabulary are dispatched to find her.
Gen and Usagi are stopped and questioned by the police as they pass
through the town, however can offer little assistance. Discovering soon
enough that it is Kitsune that is behind the trouble, Usagi is hardly
surprised and Gen is hardly able to stop his tongue dragging in the
dirt.
Over a meal, Gen is easily convinced of Kitsune's integrityand they
discover that the letter she 'found' is a note informing anoil seller of a
rebellion that is likely to cut off oil supplies to theregion. Kitsune takes
her leave of the two ronin and her scream is heard not long after she steps
outside.
Finding her pack, the two track her to the residence of the letter's
owner - Yuden the oil seller. Seeking to exchange the letter for Kitsune,
Yuden becomes somewhat less enthusiastic when he learns that the letter has
been read and orders the three killed. However, when Usagi takes Yugen
hostage, it becomes a reasonably easy matter for the three to escape. The
third rate rabble that the merchant has hired are not overly enthusiastic in
their pursuit after having seen several of their fellows dispatched.
Finding an inn, they discover through the tale of Aburage, a rival oil
seller that the letter was a fake, invented by him to gethis revenge on the
other. Usagi and Gen react somewhat differently andUsagi decides to stop
meddling in other's business at Gen's 'request'.
Morning finds Gen in high spirits (although Kitsune has left) and ready
to travel. Usagi flips Gen some travelling money, as Kitsune as always,
does what she can to get by, and Usagi, heeding the advice of his best
friend - did not want to meddle.
