Gen and Usagi move to a nearby town to continue his tale.
Giving the innkeeper money to tend to the dead samurai left behind them, he
sits down and continues to speak.
After agreeing to swear allegiance to the Mifune clan, Usagi decides to
return home to inform his family. About a day's walk from the village,
Usagi stops at an inn to rest and eat. His meal is disturbed by a
commotion at the back of the inn, caused - the innkeeper informs him - by a
drunk who refuses to leave. Offering to remove the disturbance, Usagi
storms into the back room to find Kenichi, slowly pickling himself with
sake. After a short rant at the world, he passes out, leaving Usagi to
tend to him.
Upon awakening, Kenichi attacks Usagi, blaming him for his current
predicament. During the tournament, Kenichi had sworn to defeat Usagi, or
leave the fencing school in shame. He left, and was too ashamed to return to
his village and so remained at the inn, drinking.
While trying to get food to assuage Kenichi's hangover, Usagi learns
that a group of bandits have cut off all supplies from the area; raiding the
surrounding villages and it seems as though their village is next. They
immediately set off to defend their home.
