The stage on which, according to legend, the gods enacted the creation of the Japanese Imperial line, Kyushu has also been of central importance in the documented history of Japan, serving as the entry point for Christianity, trade, porcelain and even guns. While Kyushu has long attracted visitors with its hot springs, ancient forests and mysterious, steaming volcanoes, it has recently acquired a new reputation as the theme park capital of Japan, offering everything from a simulated space trip to a giant indoor beach. In the islands to the west and south, life is unhurried and the sea is crystal clear.
