SHIKOKU

The smallest of Japan's four main islands, and known for its warm climate, Shikoku offers great diversity of scenery, both on land and at sea. To the north is the Seto Inland Sea with its hundreds of tiny islands, rich fisheries and a coastline of citrus orchards, while to the south is the powerful Pacific Ocean. The physical features include high mountains, crystal clear rivers, windswept capes and ocean whirlpools. Many visitors come to Shikoku on a pilgrimage to 88 temples to commemorate the great Buddhist saint Kobo Daishi. Previously accessible mainly by ferry, Shikoku is now firmly connected to the rest of Japan by the world's longest bridge.
