: : I agree to that, I'm just unhappy when I see a different solution. Example: The easy way to handle the bandits in #58 would be to kill them.

: : The clever way would be kill the leader and then buy/bring them some food. That way, it should be easy to win the frustrated men over. The next step would be to disband the group one-by-one in a few surrounding villages and provide them with new lives (marrying them, finding them real jobs).

: Your thoughts are interesting, however, Usagi isn't running a rehabilitation program, he's trying to make it to a duel in time.

: But I do see your point Aaron, I just wonder if it would make as captivating a read.

Information theory says that "information is the amount of surprise in the noise". So that's how story twists work: They take you by surprise and that makes it interesting to read.

That's also why Usagi is so refreshing: Usagi kills when he has to but he always strives for better solutions (unlike DC/Marvel, for example) and this way, he often comes up with interesting story twists.

You might want to read part 3 of my Usagi story Home to see how I create tension without killing people and how I actually manage to save Usagis home village from Hijiki burning it down by having one of Hijikis men killed.

IIRC, that's the only person which is killed in the whole story. OK, things get pretty rough for Usagi but that's to be expected when he falls into Hijikis hands :-)
