Well, I suppose with the right color of blue on a warm-toned paper, the color-contrast would be pleasing and give the art more "snap." It worked well for Hokusai and Hiroshige. :D

Sensei Sakai: Sepia Usagi ?

Sensei Sakai Someone recently posted a scan of page 21 from issue #93. As I looked at it, I frowned at how poorly the values were represented. The blacks were at least a value lighter than they should have been and the scan shifted the color to a warm tone. While it was a poor representation of stan...

Sensei Sakai: I must also add heaps of praise to issue 93. I had long wanted to see Usagi engaged in the more cultural aspects of feudal Japan and the cha-no-yu was tops on my list. Thank you very much. As befits a tea ceremony, I appreciate that dialogue was kept to a minimum. My only criticism for...

Oooh! The Alhambra ! I've always wanted to see that. I've only seen photographs in my Art History texts.

Moreover, I've always wanted to hear live Galician music. (Celtic music with an Arabic influence ! Very cool stuff !) Heck, I'd love it if I could find some on CD.

i have seen it a long time ago, and i didn't see long version but have a look to : Hsia nu (aka "a Touch of Zen") but it occurs in China. So we should talk of Tc'han rather than Zen. But it clearly have buddhist elements. but, hum, chambara to explain buddhism :?: you should only do zazen...

Buddhist Film Festival Suggestions Wanted

After services one Sunday, the members of my sangha (sangha= Buddhist community; In this context it means 'congregation.') began discussing ways to attract members of the public. Our usual events are public talks featuring a senior teacher or visiting monk/priest; Most of these are poorly attended d...

Re: Copyright question.

Let's say someone was working on a comic strip, and wanted one of their characters to be seen with/reading a book in nearly every appearance they make in said strip. Would this fall under fair use, or would the author's permission be needed? Wow. Y'know, as a photographer and graphic designer, its ...

The origins for Nilson goes way back to my high school days. I was doing a comic strip for the paper--about bugs and mushrooms. In my freshman year in college, I read Lord of the Rings and wanted to do a similar story. I took some of my bug characters and started an epic. I soon lost interest in th...

The problem with George Takei is that he always sounds like Mr. Sulu, even when he's not acting. Even the few times I've talked to him, I kept thinking, "He sounds like Mr. Sulu." OK. Sensei has spoken. So, we're back to Geraint "Forever Knight" Wyn-Davies or Adrian "Highla...

Interesting though.
Well, Toshiro Mifune is gone and the only voice who could keep up with John Rhys-Davies as Gen would be George Takei as Usagi ! :)

It was not a conscious choice. Some of the very early sketches may have had him with big feet, but as the character design was refined, the feet may have gotten smaller. Besides, they fit better in those waraji sandals. Thank you for the quick reply. The sandals were the first thing that came to mi...

The PERFECT voice for an animated Usagi !

Ack ! As a big Star Trek fan, I don't know why this didn't occur to me sooner:

The perfect voice for an animated Usagi would be Mr. Sulu himself: George Takei !

Question for Sensei Stan: Usagi's Feet

Sensei, I was curious about an aspect of Usagi's character design. I've noticed that Usagi has anthropoid-style feet instead of the typical Bugs-Bunny-style feet usually given to cartoon rabbits. Was this a conscious choice in Usagi's design ? If so, what was the motivation behind this choice ? Gass...

My vote for voices: Usagi: Geraint Wyn-Davies or Adrian Paul Gen: John Rhys-Davies Tomoe: Kristin Davis While I'm not too sure about her acting ability, Japanese-American adult film star Asia Carrera has a good voice, has experience voicing hentai, and speaks fluent Japanese. So, there's a place for...

One thing I recently discovered which I thought was interesting was that the honorific "-san" (as well as the familiar diminutive "-chan") is actually a construction of the modern Japanese language and wouldn't be found in the Japanese language of Usagi's time. "Sama," ...
