Weekly Trivia Challenge: March 23-30

Post by Maka »

Dear UYDers,

I'm a little low on creative energy this week due to a persistent cold. So forgive my laziness with this week's trivia contest.

Question: Who are all the people who have written the forwards for UY trade paperback collections?
1st prize: First person to list them in the comments below gets a random prize mail to them from me. You must list the book and then corresponding forward author next to it.

For example: Book one: The Ronin - No forward author. :)
Book two: Samurai - Name of forward author

Bonus question: Which one is your favorite forward and why?
2nd prize: Based on all the answers, I will subjectively pick a winner based on my taste. This is not who gets their answer in first. This person will also get a random prize.

Disclaimers:
-Bonus question: is SUBJECTIVE. My tastes may not match yours. That's okay. ;)
-Prizes will be mailed out based on my timeline (after receiving the winner's addresses), which may take a long time. UCSB's spring quarter starts on Monday. This quarter will be more busy due to a temporary reduction in my staff which increases my workload, some major events (i.e. preparing to meet the needs of our students facing as we approach the anniversary of last year's Isla Vista shooting/mass murders on May 23), and other work and life related challenges. Please be patient.
-My random prizes will be comic related but probably not Stan Sakai related. But hey, it's free, so be grateful.

This dojo community is one of the things that brings me joy each week. Thank you all for participation on these boards. I look forward to reading your thoughts below and throughout the Dojo boards. Have a great week!

Peace, maka

Great stuff, Maka!

Do you want them "PM'd" to you or just on the actually page here on the Dojo?

Thanks,
Buck

Hm, some good choices amongst all these forwards but I'd have to go with Will Eisner's forward from Book 12:Grasscutter.

I've always agreed with Eisner's assessment of comics being legitimate forms of literature and art. In his forward, he discusses how Japanese manga is more expansive in terms of subject matter and target audiences as well as being more widely accepted throughout Japanese culture and yet, how manga can also be limiting in terms of presenting actual/factual material about Japanese history, culture, and nuances. He then goes on to say how Stan, with Usagi, is able to bridge the gap (as it were) between manga and American comics by presenting such history and culture in a such a delightful package.

But it was Eisner's comment concerning Stan of "He has a good control of sequential art..." that I found most impressive. High praise indeed (and rightfully deserved). :D

I'm going to call this week's trivia challenge to a close. This weeks winners are:

1) Usagi-Yojimbo was the first to PM and post here the list of forward writers.
2) Bonus winner: I'm selecting Jubei.

I liked Steve's bonus answer but I subjectively didn't think it fit within my original question. And technically, Steve, you got question one wrong. ;)

Please PM me your addresses. A reminder that it may take a while for me to get the prizes to you both. Please be patient with me. Thank you all for playing!

Usagi-Yojimbo or Jubei can write the next challenge.

Peace, maka
