The key, and I'm presuming where Slashurr overlooked the instructions, is that no where did it state you could not use the stakes outside of the boundary. That's why solution one presented itself as soon as I saw the diagram.
After submitting this answer, I figured that the rules should have been that the ropes would all be inside the boundary, and then took a further 20 minutes until I worked out solution two. As it said, same shape, not same size, once I'd gotten over that hangup heh.
