Weekly Trivia Contest May 25 - 31

Post by Steve Hubbell »

Just a quick simple little trivia puzzle.....

Name the first three non-Usagi covers Stan Sakai has been credited for....

Please list book title, issue number, publisher, date, and characters featured.

Please PM me your answers.

Bonus Woo Whoo's for also listing the same details for the LAST three non-Usagi covers Stan has had published.

Good luck!

* "Non-Usagi" means Usagi is not a primary character in the cover art....

I did complicate it a little bit by removing one source of all the answers posted here in the forum....

There has been one almost perfect answer submitted so far. Hopefully the holiday weekend will not keep everyone from sending in their answers.

One guess only? I would like to double and triple check my answer if that's the case.

Can Usagi be part of a group shot with different Non-Sakai characters? I don't quite understand the *"Non-Usagi" means Usagi is not a primary character in the cover art...

I was originally thinking any cover other than an issue of Usagi Yojimbo, but there are some of those like the Anything Goes cover or the Amazing heroes cover which feature Usagi. Others, such as Stan's Shanda the Panda cover have Usagi drawn in as a stuffed rabbit.

You surprised me by suggesting an issue of Usagi Yojimbo which does not feature Usagi on the cover, I had not considered that possibility prior to your answer.

Surprisingly, out of the two answers so far, both are missing that first cover by Stan which does not have Usagi on it as the primary character.....

I didn't think Witty World was a possible answer because Usagi was on the cover twice. I was totally confused by this question.

I was so confident in my answers until the clues posted this morning. I have since edited my guess and hopefully did not remove previously correct answers :?
Oh well still an interesting question and I'm super curious about the final correct answers.

Since Steve did not post one of my cover guesses above, because it was wrong :P, I thought I would share it with you.

Army Surplus Komikz Featuring: Cutey Bunny #3 - JQ Enterprises - January 1984 - Cutey Bunny and a sea monster.
I thought I was being clever and found a super early Sakai cover. Stan's name does not appear on the cover, but he did draw something on the interior of the front cover. :x

I wonder if anyone tried for the "Bonus Woo Whoo's"?

I'll give it one more shot.

Hmmmm, this one was only supposed to run until May 31, which would qualify the winner for the May prize pack. What do you guys think, should I put the winner of this one into the May giveaway even though it's now ending in June?

OK, time to put everyone out of their misery here..... :D

When I first posted this, I was thinking the answer would be:

WITTY WORLD (International Cartoon Magazine)
issue: 1 - Jul/1987 - magazine, 48 pgs.
Cover Art (featuring Stan Sakai)

CRITTERS
issue: 27 - Aug/1988 - b/w comic
Cover Art (featuring Nilson Groundthumper and Hermy)

ADOLESCENT RADIOACTIVE BLACKBELT HAMSTERS MASSACRE THE JAPANESE INVASION!
issue: 1 - Aug/1989 - b/w comic, 32 pages
Cover Art (featuring the Hamsters)

First answer received:
Trevis Woods wrote: Critters 27, Fantagraphics, August 1988, features Nilson Groundthumper and Hermy
Adolescent Radioactive Blackbelt Hamsters Massacre The Japanese Invasion 1, Eclipse, August 1989, features the Hamsters
Donald Duck Adventures 32, Disney Comics, INC, January 1993, features Donald Duck

I'm guessing on the most recent non Usagi covers and assuming the new TMNT cover and King Kong cover don't count because they aren't actually published yet. Fingers crossed for the extra Woo Whoo!

Witcher 1 variant, Darkhorse Comics, March 2014 featuring Geralt
Rocket Raccoon 2, Marvel Comics, October 2014 featuring Rocket Raccoon and dinosaurs
Star Wars 1 variant, Marvel Comics,(Beach Ball comics variant), January 2015 featuring Darth Vader and Yoda
Second answer received:
Gaffey wrote: How about..........

Critters Special: The Adventures of Nilson Groundthumper and Hermy #1 - Fantagraphics Books - January 1988 - Nilson Groundthumper and Hermy

Critters #27 - Fantagraphics Books - August 1988 - Nilson Groundthumper and Hermy

Usagi Yojimbo #16 - Fantagraphics Books - May 1989 - Gen, Zat-Ino & Spot
Of course, I had completely forgotten about the Critters Special...

Third entry received:
Trevis Woods wrote:Updated answer as of 2pm CST on 6/1/16

Witty World 1, International Cartoon Magazine, July 1987, featuring Stan Sakai
Critters 27, Fantagraphics, August 1988, features Nilson Groundthumper and Hermy
Usagi Yojimbo 16, Fantagraphics, May 1989, featuring Gen, Zato Ino and Spot

I'm guessing on the most recent non Usagi covers and assuming the new TMNT cover and King Kong cover don't count because they aren't actually published yet. Fingers crossed for the extra Woo Whoo!

Witcher 1 variant, Darkhorse Comics, March 2014 featuring Geralt
Rocket Raccoon 2, Marvel Comics, October 2014 featuring Rocket Raccoon and dinosaurs
Star Wars 1 variant, Marvel Comics,(Beach Ball comics variant), January 2015 featuring Darth Vader and Yoda
Definitely got the Woo Whoo question squared away both times.....

Final entry received.....
Gaffey wrote: My final guess........

Witty World (International Cartoon Magazine) #1 - Witty World Publications - July 1987 - Stan at his drawing board

Critters Special: The Adventures of Nilson Groundthumper and Hermy #1 - Fantagraphics Books - January 1988 - Nilson Groundthumper and Hermy

Critters #27 - Fantagraphics Books - August 1988 - Nilson Groundthumper and Hermy
And this makes Gaffey the winner of the main question, and Trevis the winner of the Woo Whoo question....

So I guess we can say you both won!
