Stan Sakai is the Eisner Award winner who created the series Usagi Yojimbo. This series is about Miyamoto Usagi, a samurai rabbit, that lives his adventures in the Japan of the late-sixteenth and early-seventeenth-century. First published in 1984, this comic series continues to these days.

Stan Sakai, vincitore dell’Eisner Award, e creatore della serie a fumetti Usagi Yojimbo. Protagonista di questa serie è Miyamoto Usagi, un coniglio samurai che vive le sue avventure nel Giappone del tardo sedicesimo ed inizio diciassettesimo secolo. Pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1984, la serie è ancora in corso.

RUFFINO RENATO UMBERTO: When did your passion for the world of comic books begin and who inspired it?
Quando è iniziata la tua passione per i fumetti e quali sono stata le tue fonti di ispirazione?
STAN SAKAI: I grew up reading comics. When I was young, everybody read them—this was in the early 1960’s. We bought them, loaned them to each other and traded them. It was not until much later, though, that I realized you could actually do this as a profession.
Sono cresciuto leggendo fumetti. Quando ero piccolo tutti li leggevano, questo nei primi anni ’60. Quando li compravamo ce li scambiavamo e prestavamo tra di noi. Dopo poco ho capito che il fumetto sarebbe stato il mio mestiere.
RUFFINO RENATO UMBERTO: In your series Usagi Yojimbo you have mixed up together two different styles of art: manga and comics. How did you do?
Nella tua serie Usagi Yojimbo hai fuso insieme due stili grafici: manga e fumetto americano. Come ci sei riuscito?
STAN SAKAI: I grew up in Hawaii, which is part of the US where a very large Japanese population lives. I read both, US comics and manga, and I was influenced by both.
Sono cresciuto alle Hawaii, che è una parte degli U.S.A. dove vivevano molti Giapponesi. Così sono entrato in contatto sia con i Manga che con i fumetti americani e sono stato influenzato da entrambi.
RUFFINO RENATO UMBERTO: 2011 marks the 25th anniversary of Usagi Yojimbo: it’s an amazing goal. How do you feel?

STAN SAKAI: Actually 2009 was Usagi’s 25th anniversary (Ndr Dho!). One of the events of that year was writing and drawing Yokai. It was an original graphic novel, fully painted with watercolors. I had painted other stories, but this was the most ambitious color project I had done.

I love Yokai is a full colored volume.
Is there the possibility of see other stories of Usagi in color?

STAN SAKAI: I would love to do more painted stories. The problem is that it does take a long time to complete—about three times longer than an average story.

RUFFINO RENATO UMBERTO: Is there an Italian tour in your agenda?

STAN SAKAI: I travel to Europe about twice a year, but I’ve never visited Italy. I enjoy travelling. In 2010, I went to Germany, Australia, Canada and Croatia, in addition to cities in the US.
Viaggio in Europa circa due volte l’anno, ma non sono mai stato in Italia. Mi piace viaggiare. Nel 2010 sono stato in Germania, Austria, Canada e Croazia oltre a varie città degli USA.
RUFFINO RENATO UMBERTO: Is there any Italian artist who inspired your style?
C’è qualche artista italiano che ha ispirato il tuo stile?
STAN SAKAI: I love Milo Manara’s work—especially his early black and white work. My friend, Sergio Aragones, gave me a few of Manara’s books and I was amazed with his ink lines.
Adoro i lavori di Milo Manara specialmente i primi in B\N, il mio amico Sergio Aragones (Ndr. artista iberico, autore di Groo) mi diede vari volumi di Manara e rimasi estasiato dal suo tratto.
RUFFINO RENATO UMBERTO: In Italy, Usagi is published by a little publishing house (Bottero edizioni).
The last volume published was Grasscutter vol.1 in 2008.
We are a little in delay, can you spoiler us what is actually happening in the world of Usagi??
In Italia Usagi Yojimbo viene pubblicato da una piccola casa editrice (Bottero edizioni).
L’ultimo volume pubblicato è stato Grasscutter vol.1 nel 2008.
Siamo leggermente in ritardo, ci puoi raccontare cosa sta succedendo nel mondo di Usagi?
STAN SAKAI: So far, I have drawn more than 5.000 Usagi Yojimbo story pages. Grasscutter was published in the US in 1999, and won a Will Eisner Award (Will also wrote the introduction for the US edition). Since then, there was a sequel to Grasscutter, more adventures with Gen and other old friends, as well as meeting more friends and enemies. Tomoe told the story of how she came to serve Lord Noriyuki, and we met her sister. Usagi traveled with his son, Jotaro, for awhile, and we learned the origin of Jei the demon. UY Book 25: Fox Hunt will be published in the US in July.
Fino ad ora, ho realizzato più di 5000 pagine di storie di Usagi, Grasscutter è stato pubblicato negli USA nel 99 ed ha vinto un Eisner Award (Will ha anche scritto l’introduzione del volume U.S.A.). Successivamente c’è stato un seguito di Grasscutter, altre avventure con Gen ed altri vecchi amici, oltre all’incontro di nuovi amici e nemici. Tomoe ci racconta come è entrata al servizio di Lord Noriyuki e facciamo la conoscenza di sua sorella. Usagi ha viaggiato per un po’ con suo figlio Jotaro ed abbiamo conosciuto le origini di Jei il demone. Il volume 25 di Usagi Yojimbo intitolato “Fox hunt” è in uscita per luglio negli U.S.A.
