Panda Khan?

Post by chickrockguitar »

Hey evryone.
Some one told me today that "Panda Khan" when I mentioned him to them was in an Usagi issue... I was like... "No... you're thinkin' of Lord Nori...". Panda Khan hasn't been in Usagi has he? If so where, cos I've missed him, lol.

I've read pretty much all the stories and I don't remember him at all. I could possibly be wrong though.

I think he was in a story back in the Fantagraphics days when there use to be an eight page back-up story in almost every issue. I have no idea which issue or what the title was (but I will look for the information now - :D ) It would have been a story by Dave Garcia, not Stan Sakai.

Thanks Steve!

Any other "Panda Khan" info would be awesome! I know he had a four part mini and a special.. and was in the 90s TMNT, so has a figure. But thats all the info I have...

Stan, what about a cross-over? Hehe.

Greetings James,

Interesting tht you should mention Panda Khan as I just sold my extra
issues of 1-4 at ConFurence 11.

From my copies here is some information about them.

The puiblisher is ABACUS Press and the title of the books is indeed
"the Chronicles of Panda Khan." The first issue is copyright February
1987 by Dave Garcia and Monica Sharp.

According to the first issues preface Panda Khan First appeared in
Richard Harris Fanzine "FANtasy" in 1983. Then appeared in "TYRO the
Interfan Showcase"(a fanzine?).

Issues 6-9 of WaRP Graphics' A Distant Soil(ADS) each had 8 pages of
The Chronicles of Panda Khan. ADS was cancelled before the series was
finished.

Since the ADS material was drawn with possible color reproduction n
mind the inking was kept simple with a minimum use of Zip-A-Tone. For
this reason Dave chose to redraw most of the material for the stand
alone The Chronicles of Panda Khan.

As for issues higher then number 4 I have not seen them. Issues 1-4
four were put out in a span of 3 years so it did not have a high
publishing rate. I do not know whether issues higher then 4 were
published.

Sincerely,
Michael Angel Peña(AKA Sparrow...A Rabbit)

Segments of Panda Kahn were pubished in an athology comic book titled
"Airlock", around 1987 and 1988. but since then nothing was heard of PK nor
"Airlock" and the company that produced the comic series.

Yes, I believe those are the only two backup stories he did in Usagi.

Hard to believe they didn't do more with this character! The Abacus Press issues were fascinating. I've never read the special though. I wonder if Stan knows why they stopped.

Would it be okay for me to scan those issues and put the pages up if people wanted to see them btw?

Panda Khan also appears in Laffin' Gas #5. It's a spoof story in which the main character meets other comic book protagonists except that, when he meets Panda Khan, it's actually done by Dave Garcia

He also appears in the Varmints Special #1. Usagi is sometimes incorrectly billed as appearing in the issue as well.

To the best of my knowledge, Airlock #3 was Panda Khan's final appearance.

Was Panda Khan (drawn by Garcia) in a couple other issues of Laffin' Gas as well? Seems I saw issues #3 and #4 mentioned as well.

Stan provided the back cover art for Varmints Special #1 (featuring Usagi and the cast of Varmints).

I have 1-8 and have scanned through them pretty quickly. There's no table of contents. I didn't see Panda Khan in anything but 5, but Dave Garcia does the art for several issues. I'll check again.

Edit: Just double checked. Unless PK makes a one panel cameo that I might have missed, he does not appear in #3 or 4. I went through both issues page by page.

They were listed in an ebay "Complete Phanda Khan" set of comics that was sold back in November not long after this thread was first started. Unfortunately, I didn't save a link to the ebay description.

Not the first time something was mis-listed on ebay....
