Gary: owner of the corner bookstore

Post by Maka »

Hello UY fans,

I been rereading individual issues and graphic novels to relax after the kids are asleep. I discovered that Gary Nishimura: owner of the now defunct corner bookstore (okay, I guess it's not officially defunct since it's in his back yard - but I can never go there again :( ) is in three UY comic stories.

"The Duel" Issue 26, Vol 1 Gary get the crap beat out of him. It's one of the favorite UY stories (not because Gary get beat up).

"Broken Ritual" Issue 33, vol. 1 (plot by Sergio Argones) has him as the corner bookstore owner. (Very cute for insiders)

"The Gambler, the Widow, and the Ronin" Issue 8, vol 2 brings him back as the gambler. He dies in this issue, so i guess he's not coming back soon.

I know, geeky, but as a random customer of Gary's (I'd drive from Monterey Park to San Gabrielle every weekend during my first two years of college to search his bins and pick up the latest The Tick. Alas, I didn't know about UY back then) it fun to see an everyday man like Gary in the comics.

Do any other non comic people make it into UY? Has Mrs. Sakai or the children ever made it in (beyond the guest inker)?

Now that would make a good internet contest.

Peace,

Maka

Actually, the only story that Gary is officially in, is broken ritual where he plays the owner of the corner book store.

The other two were look alikes (tho some say it might be Mark Evanier).
