I took up the game of Go about eight months ago. Enthralled, I quickly rose up the ranks from 30kyu to 6kyu. I love this game!
During a Go game earlier this week, I began wondering why Go never appeared in the pages of Usagi Yojimbo. Then I remembered that Kojo (in "Demon Mask") plays Go with Usagi. Today I finally had some free time to go back and read the "Demon Mask" saga in deep anticipation. To my disappointment, I discovered that when Kojo asks Usagi for a game of Go, they play Gomoku instead!
Gomoku is "connect five," and it is played using Go stones on a Go board...but it is not Go.
Since then, I read a book on Go, went to a Go tournament, and went to the website of the American Go Association.
It was corrected in the trade paperback.
It occurred because I used to play Go as a kid. Except what I played was not Go at all, but Gomoku which uses the same board and game pieces. When I made that reference in the comic, I heard about that mistake as far away as Germany.
I think the first time i had ever heard of Go was when i bought my first Usagi Yojimbo issue that i ever read, it was issue 35 and the first issue of "demon mask". Though i never got the next issue of that story, i should get it some day. Anyways, i first started playing Go on yahoo games, because it struck my interest, and i did enjoy it, but... i was never any good at it.
