Issue 101 - Spoilers
I'm surprised no one has mentioned anything about issue 101 yet.
It was great (of course). Usagi's fever dream was truly scary and I loved the part where Tomoe slices off Usagi-Jei's ear. And their death scene together was really heart wrenching. I hope this isnt foreshadowing.
One thing about the cover. I was staring at it for a good 10 minutes admiring it when I realised why it looked different. There was no Usagi Yojimbo logo on it. Did anyone else notice that?
Looking forward to what you guys thought.

I just read it last night...creepy scene between Usagi-Jei and Tomoe. Actually a little disturbing! I have to admit though, this was an awesome issue, a lot more bloodier than usual. I was hoping to see a little more development in Chizu's plight with her ninja clan though, looks like she's still on the run...I guess that'll have to wait until another day (maybe the Ninja Wars storyline that Stan has forecasted?). The cliffhanger with Shizukiri left me confused and wanting to read 102 immediately...the cover of 102 shows a black blade, a la Usagi-Jei's sword. Shizu does not carry demon swords however....so what the heck could that mean???
I did notice the non-logo either...quite unusual...maybe something to do with DHC's 20th? Maybe the logo will now be displayed smaller under the DHC logo on the side corner on all future issues? The empty space up top sure does give stan a lot more room to sign the books.

Like everything else having to do with design, this was Cary Grazzini's doing. He liked the cover so much, that he did not want to cover it up with a logo.MikeM wrote:

You're looking for too much meaning in the art. It was just a matter of trying to make the sword in the foreground a bit more prominent.Todd Shogun wrote:

well... I see I'm going to have to go get this right now - all thoughts of not buying the single issues (at least 'till I've caught up on all the trades) is out the window! Plus I have to admit to buying issue 99 and 100 as well - you know - accidentally!
Plus that cover is way too enticing

101 plus a bonus
Picked my copy up last night and when the owner slapped my copy down on the counter he also let me have his OPEN/CLOSE sign from Darkhorse with Usagi on it. He decided to go with his old one and remembered that I had asked about it last month. An unexpected surprise!
Immediately noticed the logo was missing and my personal opinion is that it should happen like that every issue. A much sharper and honestly more noticeable cover because it just doesn't look like other stuff on the shelf. Most of the time Retailer incentive covers put the logo in a corner, similar to what Turner does with his Aspen books. PLEASE consider doing this more often so we get a virtual pin up every issue. Great story as well! Well worth the wait between last issue and this one.

Agreement on what everyone else has said. A fantastic issue. Interesting to see Usagi's possible worst fears of succumbing to Jei and then harming those he cares for. And what an amazing cover. Again because it needs said, AMAZING!
Things need not have happened to be true. Stories and dreams are what will endure when mere facts are dust and forgotten.

I think he made a good call. Without the logo the cover really stood out.Stan Sakai wrote:Like everything else having to do with design, this was Cary Grazzini's doing. He liked the cover so much, that he did not want to cover it up with a logo.MikeM wrote:

Well! that was fun! I had to buy two as I am officially in love with the cover - very nice that they let it stand without a lot of text clutter. I agree about that overhead panel too - just stunning. It was unusual and a bit excruciating to see Usagi so vulnerable for so long. Very enjoyable issue and that last page - ulp!
Thanks Stan- you rock!
