The Dinner: sorry these didn't turn out too well. I know Mike and Steve also have a few shots. It was awesome - great food and excellent company. I finally had Otoro and it was absolutely fantastic! fresh Wasabi was also a first for me mmmmmmmmmmm.
Unfortunately, I don't have any photos from the Dojo get-to-gether or the dinner. Camera problems caused by borrowing a strange camera at the last minute and not being familiar enough with it when I went to use it. Apparently, I took a couple small videos of nothing whe I thought I was just taking a photo.
Anyways, I did get a small handful of shots before the problem happened...
I am really bummed that I never got the chance to get pictures of Morna San, David Peterson, Guy Davis, MikM, Shaxper, Billy Tucci, and everyone else who I got to meet and spend a little time with. It was definitely a great weekend.
I hadn't realized that Nick was the one that drew the Usagi fan art for the big competition. Keira and I saw it displayed and really liked it!
Mike M., that's the closest to spelling Keira's name correctly that anyone has ever come
And I must say I'm very envious of all the great original art you guys purchased! I thought long and hard about getting that last page to Usagi #100, but the trip itself taxed our funds quite a bit. Ah well. There's always next time!
After getting home I realised I had forgotten three things.
1. A sketch book so I can get a sketch from artists. I got t Stan's booth and I thought, 'oh, I knew I forgot something'.
2. A bag to carry things around in. I had to keep making trips to the car to drop off my stuff.
3. I forgot to get Sergio to sign my copy of Solo! Luckily I got that awesome photo that Gary took of Sergio and I sitting beside each other. Too bad I look out of it.
The dinner was great and I had a good time meeting all of the dojo memebers who attended.
Stan, I am SO glad I called out to you as you walked by my table at SDCC! I really have enjoyed our conversations and appreciate you being so down to earth and genuine. I look forward to future cons we both set up at.
And I know Sergio doesn't log-in here, but he was a real treat! He gave me some advice about being a writer/artist that will stick with me the rest of my career. I could listen to that man tell stories for hours.
Here is a scan of some ACEO's (Art Cards, Editions and Originals - which are baseball card size art work) which I aquired at the convention on behalf of Usagi mailing list member John Torregrossa, who was unable to attend the convention.
I am so tempted to keep a couple of these, they look so nice, but I already sent the scan to John and he sent such an enthusiastic reply that I couldn't hold out on him now, even if I wanted.
PS
It must be a real pain to draw on these little pieces of card stock!
I swear that MCCC was more fun than SDCC! It was because of the people. Stan and Sergio, Guy Davis and Rosey, Jeremy Bastian, David Petersen and their goofy and talented buddy Nate Pride. What a great bunch. It was nice for Gary and I to be immersed in another branch of the art world. We had a great chat with Sergio about art and making a living by your artistic endeavors - and the challenges thereof. Man! The guy has so much exuberence - just like his art. Same with Stan. But different Stan has a calm centeredness and grace that is so well expressed in his work. The quality of line the economy of means that I've admired so much in artists like Matisse. Expressive mark making is a big deal to me in my own work and I really think an artist's character is reflected in their line. It was a great pleasure to get to know these two characters. For me it's part of the reward of comics to have experiences like this from time to time and connect with fellow artists. Thanks so much Stan-san
Here's a shot of Stan and Guy Davis with the awesome Usagi/War of the Worlds piece that Guy made for Stan. Guy dropped it off while Gary and I were chatting with Stan early-ish on the Friday.

It was such a pleasure getting to know you a bit. I know we'll both be at San Diego, but that place is such an asylum that you can't do more than wave to each other from other ends of the hall or say "hello" in passing. These smaller cons are great for just sitting and talking, and having dinners together.
I've know Sergio for almost 30 years, and I still enjoy his stories. And, even after all that time, there are still stories he tells that I had not heard before.

Guy is one of the nicest persons I have ever met. Now I can't believe how intimidated I was when I first saw him. But then, I was a lot younger and just starting out in comics. I was also really reluctant to impose upon people I really admired. When I first saw Guy with his orange mohawk, leather jacket, chains, and his thick "Frankenstein boots", it just drove me over the edge and I avoided him that entire weekend. I am so glad I have gotten to know him over the years. We don't see each other often, but I think of him and Rose as dear friends.
Awesome photos and scans you guys!! Thanks for posting. I'll go ahead and link this thread from the home page as the "official" MCCC UYD page (that is unless anyone out there wants to put together a more official page -- PM me).
It looks like everyone had a great time. I wish I had been able to make it. Major jealousy/envy here people!!!
Thanks to Morna-san and Steve for organizing it all.
