General discussion about Usagi Yojimbo, the comics, the stories, the characters, collectibles, TV appearances, Stan Sakai, Space Usagi, Nilson & Hermy, and all other related topics.
I read it last night. Very cool 1st part (of I believe a 2-parter for the Jei Origin piece). This whole thing about the dark gods has got me really wanting to see what happens next. I don't want to give away too much though but we're starting to see a lot regarding Jei's behavior, the whole Keiko thing, etc....
So, Jei's gods aren't neccessarily "THE Gods" - they're just a group of malevolent deities with a chip on their shoulders. Makes sense. Jei murders only what "his" gods would perceive as evil. In their eyes, Usagi is probably equal to the likes of Hitler and Manson.
Yes, and it even touches on why Jei thinks Usagi is "evil" and that he has to rid the world of "evil"...the concept of evil is perceived in different ways by different people/deities. What might be truly evil by our own standards could be good to others and vice versa. Priest Ibaraki of the dark gods did what appears to be "good" deeds in this story (curing the peasant boy), which begs the question on how they define "evil"...perhaps it is not as fundamental as a 180-degree flip from our own definition of evil - the opposite of good - but something more specific...
Got the issue today. Had to go to two comic shops to get it, but I got it. Got to talk about the latest Star Wars novel in the first, so no regrets.
The opening is good with the sparring match between the main character of the priest and his friend.
The part where the priest encounters the first sick child is good. Excellent foreboding when he can't identify it and the conflict with the dark priest. Having the dark priest corrupt the pumpkin was a nice touch.
I'd love to see what happens when the main character has to strike what I can only imagine as a dark deal with the dark priest to save the lord's daughter. Good issue.
grrr, I went to my local comic shop after work and they hadn't received their shipment yet. Bad enough comics got delayed until Thursday, I go on Thursday and the comics arent in yet. Apparently as long as they deliver before 5, there is nothing he can do. I left at 4:30 for a doctor's appointment and they werent there yet.
Guess Ill have to wait until after work tomorrow.
Ill respond about the story then. (I havent read any posts about the story yet because i dont want to be spoiled)
first, I just want to say that I am up to book 7 of the collected stories. and I am wowed by the consistent quality of story and art. I especially like the use of different "camera" angles. awesome stuff.
as for the start of the current arc, I enjoyed this issue very much. it was kinda of creepy seeing that Jei's trademark laugh, and martial skill were there from the beginning.
anyone else feel that this illness is just a trap for Jei?
also, anyway else notice that creepy looking face on page 22 on the rock in the far right side of the panel? it looks almost like Ibaraki.
Wow. Great story. Random uncollected thoughts follow:
1. Stan, were the evil statues in the cave inspired by the Seven Deadly Sins from the old Marvel Family comics? That was where my mind went right away.
2. Any chance that we'll see story notes for this issue? I'd love to know if this illness has any historical basis, or if it's just a creation by our local evil practitioner in a scheme to turn Priest Ji.
3. Great characterization on Ji. I love this guy tremendously. This origin is going to leave us looking at Jei in a whole new way. Instead of just wanting him dead or defeated, we'll want to see him cured and returned to his old self. I already want the old Ji back more than I want the return of the old Inazuma.
4. Of course, now that Ji's body is dead, is there any way for him to return?
5. In response to one of Todd's questions, I think there are absolute boundaries for good and evil in this story. I think Ibaraki only healed the peasant boy in order to tempt Ji to turn to him for help. It's the only way he was ever going to have a chance of ensnaring Ji. This is why I think the entire disease may have been manufactured by him.
6. I can't help but wonder if this origin story and Usagi's vision in #101 are all leading up to a final (and I mean final) confrontation with Jei. If it is, nice going, Sensai!

I can't for the life of me say why, but the concept of "Jeisagi" absolutely fascinates me. He's the perfect fusion between the hero and the villain. Call me a sadist, but I hope it comes to pass. The idea of one final confrontation with Jei, followed by an epic story arc wherein Usagi battles his own newly-acquired demonhood, is so freakin' cool that I can't even think straight!
