Gen's father was in service to the Shirageta clan, but Gen has actually been a ronin since since he was a child.
To learn more about his past, read the story titled "Gen" in Book 7 (which is titled "Gen's Story"). The story was originally published in three parts with the sub-titles Gen part 1 - Lady Asano's Story, Gen part 2 - Sins of the Father, and Gen part 3 - Lady Asano's Revenge.
Most of what has been told about Gen's past are in this story. The three leaves which form part of his mon or clan crest is actually a stylized daikon radish according to what Stan Sakai has mentioned before.
