Todd Shogun wrote:Agreed. And this is the main goal of the UY Dojo... to get us there! In fact, it's my opinion that Usagi should start off as a video game first, before going into TV series and movies and such. The seriousness of the series could be kept easily in tact in a game. Wouldn't need to worry about studio peeps dumbing it down to market it for kids. Serious games play, sell, and are much more popular than "Mario" games...they appeal to a much more wider audience.

Usagi is already being published by one of the most media-oriented comics companies ou there... like you say, it's only a matter of time.
I think rapscallion is definitely onto something with his suggestion that an Usagi adventure game could work, and indeed work well, but do remember that the adventure genre is, by and large dead. Adventure games on release are few and far between. Crying shame, mais c'est la vie...

I have to disagree slightly with todd, however, who said it wouldn't be marketed down to kids. It would, and far more than necesary. Publishers want returns, and the visual style Stan uses lends itself primarily to a young audience at first, until such time as the depth of the characters and story is allowed to show. Being a series that is not read or known that widely, i fear a greedy publisher might exploit the franchise and not let it breathe as it needs. You seem to underestimate the severe difficulty of making gamers care about the characters they play. (I personally put it down to developers underdeveloping this aspect of games, but hey, each to their opinion! :P ). A tv series, on the other hand, would first expose Usagi to a very wide audience in a media form more adequate to what Usagi represents, allowing for the general public to get to know the characters and familiarise themselves with them. The exposure could only be good, and would certainly draw more readers in too. If they then saw a game in the shop with Usagi, wouldn't they immediately associate it with the already excellent series they've seen?

I think the best way of approaching how an excellent Usagi game could be made would be to think of who should actually develop it, and be able to do so well.

Ubisoft as a publisher has really been stretching it's limits and trying new things, and, by and large, has done extremely well. Look at the recent (but horribly undersold) Beyond Good and Evil. French developers have an excellent track record on adventure games also, having brought us the wonders of Broken Sword and, i think, Alone in the Dark even. Lucasarts have a proven track record in adventure, but it seems unlikely they'd take it as it's not SW related! :P

For an RPG game, i think only Bioware could possibly do it justice (or the former Black Isle staff), and as for fps devs... well, let's just say most of the best developers are either defunct or it's not the kind of game they'd be suited for. Shiny or Planet Moon Studios might pull something fantastic and entirely original from the Usagi franchise though!

Nice post, Elgaucho. I really wanna play Beyond Good and Evil, but I haven't had the chance to play it yet.

Ah, good ol' Lucasfilm Games days :D . The Secret of Monkey Island will always be one of the best videogames ever. It's a shame that they don't do this kind of games any more.

Look behind you! A three-headed monkey!

a hack n' slash rpg usagi yojimbo video game

Post by gunblade007 »

hey everyone,
i agree usgai yojimbo should be made into a game for psx2,GC,x-box. and maybe GBA too. it should be a hack n' slash game like the ninja turtles, lord of the rings. and maybe a rpg hack n' slash. you can get jobs and work and build up your skills by fighting and training. and you go to bed like in the old rpgs games. and eat. but you don't need to buy armor and weapons. to update your guy. you can do side quest. and you earn money from doing stuff. and maybe you can fight like in zelda64 not like in rpgs like in final fantasy. and monsters don't pop up you can choose to fight the monster. and tmnt doesn't suck i'm a old school fan and i also like usagi yojimbo too. the game is fun and hard. it should be a little easier for the little kids. but i almost beat the game using a cheat to play splinter. well that's it.

Game on!

Well I'm back from LA & a rather decadent trip of gaming. I just spent the last four days playing D&D's Oriental Adventures in a home-brewed Rokugan setting. Wow, that game is amazing. I won't bore anyone with details, but lets just say I'm willing to drive six hours out of my way to play it.

Elgaucho makes some good points. All the big companies just want their money. If the entertainment corporations think something will do better marketed toward children (or that children are THE only option), then they'll go with what they see as the safest (or most profitable) venture, sanctity of the product be damned. In reality, children are quick & safe. You need only fool children for a little while to get their money (or parents' money), before you reveal the true content (or lack thereof) in your product. It's unfortunate that when these corps look at something like Usagi, they don't see past the "funny little critters" to Usagi's true content, they just immediately write it off as another quick child's market product. When the big companies eventually read into Usagi, they realize that it isn't the next child fad, and they try to turn Usagi into something it isn't (as I've seen when Stan showed us the 3D animated Usagi clip at Fanime Con) rather than adapt their venture to incorporate Stan's vision of the character, and his story. It'll take some doing, but I think the corporations will evetually be willing to see things Stan's (and his fans') way.

Truth be told, the Usagi game will require a capable fan to design it, but a fan that is willing to make the correct sacrifices to have it succeed in the gaming market. Such sacrifices should only be made to enhance gameplay, not to satisfy the marketing department. In a perfect world, marketing should only be used to inform people of your product, not to "trick" people into buying it. If you build a good game, people will play it, regardless of content. Game companies have a hard enough time meeting this requirement alone. Usagi (like most other licensed products) has the added requirement of having to satisfy the license holder's vision of his product, and Stan should of course settle for no less than complete satisfaction in this regard.

Mark my words; another Usagi game is around the corner. I just hope we get around that corner sooner rather than later, and that the awaiting product is everything I've ever hoped and dreamed.

With the current path I'm taking, if I end up having a significant say in the creation of a Usagi game, it will more than likely be published by Capcom.

Well i tell ya folks, I think a really neat Usagi game would follow the battle system of Nightmare creatures, where you have to actually remember how to do your combos in a 3d environment. IT's not too easy. Nadia had a couple usagi moves!

RYAAAA!!!

Heh heh.

With the success of the "Batman: Arkham Asylum" and later this month "Batman: Arkham City" game, I think Rocksteady would be the best company to make a Usagi Yojimbo videogame. Hmmm...The possibilities.
