Help with Usagi Stories Not Yet Collected

Post by Ghost9 »

Can some of you help me with this? Since I came to the Usagi party late, I'm trying to go back and collect all of the Usagi stories out there. I'm fine with getting them in the TPB's, since it seems they've done a very good job of collecting most of the UY stories out there. I'm not such a stickler that I need to try and round up all of the individual comics themselves (plus, I don't have that much money to spend on what it would cost!). So, basically my plan is to get TPB's 1-23 (I currently have 1-7 & 10), Space Usagi TPB, and The Art of Usagi Yojimbo TPB.

So, I guess my question is - what am I missing? I went through the concordance with a fine-tooth comb and came up with these (also, I'll mention that I don't plan on tracking down all of the comics where Usagi makes a cameo; I really just want the stories).

As far as I can tell, none of these have been reprinted in any of the TPB's or anywhere else for that matter. Please correct me if I'm wrong, and feel free to add to my list.

- Amazing Heroes #187 (not sure what the story name is)
- "The Treaty" from the TMNT Shell Shock GN (I know this was reprinted in a HC, but didn't know if there was anywhere else to get it. I'd be willing to buy the TMNT GN, if I knew where and it was reasonable)
- The Art of Usagi Yojimbo #1 & 2 (from Radio Comix). The only story I know from either of these is "The Courage of the Plum"
- "The Guardian" from the Trilogy II Tour Book
- "Usagi and the Kami of the Pond" from Dark Horse Maverick 2001

Another question - have the backups "The Crossing" (from UY Vol. 1 # 10), "Revenge of the Tokage God (from #20), and "Usagi Yojimbo Meets Panda Khan" from (#34) been reprinted anywhere?

And, finally - since the concordance stops with UY Vol. 3 #59, did it miss any UY stories or appearances since then? In the future I know there's going to be a FCBD story this year and then the "Saya" story that was just released on MySpace will be coming out in print sometime down the road. Other than that, what am I missing??

Sorry for all the questions, but this will REALLY help me out, and everyone on the board seems incredibly knowledgeable. Thanks so much in advance!

The information included in the lists posted on this thread is a little bit more current and might answer some of your questions.....

- Amazing Heroes #187 featured an original Usagi Yojimbo cover (very cool!). The issue also featured an indepth interview with Stan Sakai. There is also an 8 page biographical style story by Stan Sakai showing how he creates an issue of Usagi Yojimbo (reprinted in both the Art of Usagi Yojimbo #1 from Radio Comix and the Hardcover 20th Anniversary Art of Usagi Yojimbo book).

- So far, the Treaty has only been published in the TMNT book and in the s/n limited edition hardcover of Usagi Yojimbo Book 6. Stan has mentioned recently that it might be reprinted in the upcoming deluxe 2 volume Usagi Yojimbo Omnibus from Fantagraphics later this year.

- The Courage of the Plum is the only actual Usagi Yojimbo story published in either of the 2 issues of The Art of Usagi Yojimbo that Radio Comix published. Courage of the Plum was reprinted in Book 11 (Seasons) as part of the story "Snakes and Blossoms" which also incorporates the short story Hebi.

- The Guardian was reprinted in the Hardcover 20th Anniversary Art of Usagi Yojimbo book.

- As far as I know, Usagi and the Kami of the Pond has not been reprinted in any of the books yet.

- I have never heard of any of the Usagi back-up stories drawn by other creators being reprinted. I have also not heard anything about any of the back-up stories which Stan worked on being reprinted anywhere either.

Welcome to the wonderful world of trying to get everything in original form ;)

I wish you bon chance... I think all I still need are the DHE issues with Tsuru in, the Drawing the Line publication and the Oni Double Feature. But that's from being vigilant and willing to spend heh...

The only pricey buy will be the Shell Shock GN which will run you at a minimum of $20 most likely only found on Ebay. There are a couple 'buy it now' options but those are over $45 I believe. If you wait long enough you can snag one for around $20-25. I think I saw one on their real recently.

The Art of UY (Radio Comix)#2 can be found through this link:

Good luck finding the others, it can be a lot of fun!

I got my Shell Shock for five quid... really depends on where you can find it. I may have been lucky to find someone in the UK selling it...

I still have a big box of Amazing Heroes !87. Ghost9--let me know if you want one, and I'll bring it down to Staple in March.

The Treaty is scheduled to be reprinted in the Complete Fantagraphics UY in June.

The Kami of the Pond has not been reprinted? I did not know that, and I'm sure Editor Diana did not either. I don't remember if it was scheduled to be in UY Book 23: Bridge of Tears. If not, it will probably be included in Book 25, as it will not fit in with Book 24: The Darkness and the Soul. Remind me.

We do not own the reprint rights to Usagi stories by other creators, so these will probably not see print in any of the Usagi books, aside from the stories done for UY 100.

I did a Queen & Country short story that was reprinted in one of their trades. My France travelogue was printed in that autobiographix trade from Dark Horse. My Grendel and Simpsons stories are also available in collections. However, my short stories with Lionheart and Space Ark have never been reprinted.

We keep talking about doing a Nilson and Hermy collection, but keep putting it off.

Wow, thanks to all who contributed!!! This certainly helped out significantly, though it did raise a few more questions from me! Sorry - please bear with me being so anal and probably asking questions that have been answered before.

- So, "One Night in the Cold" (from Critters 23) was incorporated in full into "The Lizard's Tale" in the Book 8 TPB?

- Was "Usagi's Ark" from Vol. 1 #22 never reprinted?

- "A Lesson in Courtesy" (from DH Extra #45-48) was reprinted in the Book 17 TPB?

- "Cooking Lesson" (from Drawing the Line #1) was reprinted in the Book 20 TBP?

- Is "The Courage of the Plum" in the TPB edition of Book 11 (as part of "Snakes and Blossoms" or just in the HC edition?

- Is the content the same in the Art of Usagi Yojimbo HC and TPB? (i.e. is "The Guardian" in the TPB)?

- "Ninja Hunt" from More Fund Comics #1 was never reprinted anywhere?

- This story of "The Crossing" - http://usagiyojimbo.com/other/uyletters ... uy10_1.jpg is in UY Vol. 1 #10?

Stan, if you would please bring me a copy of Amazing Heroes #187 to Staple, I would be most appreciative! Also, if you have copies of UY Vol. 1 #10, #20 (so I can have the "Revenge of the Tokage God" story), and #34 (so I can have the "Usagi Yojimbo Meets Panda Khan" story).

Also, it sounds like I need to track down these issues in order to complete my quest...

- Shell Shock (unless I can track down the UY HC for cheaper...unlikely I'm guessing)
- TMNT #47 "Hare Today, Hare Tomorrow" - is this it? http://www.mycomicshop.com/comicbooks/item?IID=9705771
- Dark Horse Maverick 2001
- Nocturnals: Troll Bridge #1

Sound about right???? Hope I got them all. Thanks again for all your help, and I look forward to your responses!

Hello,
I'll try to answer some of your questions as best as I can:

"A Lesson in Courtesy", "Cooking Lesson", "The Courage of the Plum", and "Hebi" are collected in the TPBs as you said;
"The Guardian" as well as the color version of "Return to Adachi Plain" was reprinted in the Art of UY, content does not differ from HC to TPB here "Return to Adachi Plain" was reprinted in one of the TPBs in b/w, though I can't recall which one right now;
You don't have to try to get TMNT #47, "Hare today, Hare Tomorrow" is reprinted in the Space Usagi TPB/HC as well as "Under the Same Sky".

Nocturnals: Troll Bridge #1 is more like a cameo than a real Usagi story, it's a six pager (if my memory serves me right) of a Nocturnal character coming into the world of UY; That thing is a little like an anthology of different artists trying there hands on Nocturnals, pretty funny and well done in black, white and orange, but nothing essential in neither UY nor Nocturnals contingency.

I wish you the best of luck trying to track down everything on your wish list; if you should have difficulties with Shrouded Moon or Grey Shadows, I've got spare TPBs due to replacing them with HCs; PM me in case you'd like to have them.
Greetings from overseas

Awesome, thank you Thomas for so much clarification! That really, really helps out a lot.

I'm going to get Amazing Heroes #187 from Stan; buy the Shell Shock TPB somewhere; and buy Dark Horse Maverick 2001.

That, combined with all the TPB's should get me to completeness, with the exception of maybe - "Usagi's Ark" from Vol. 1 #22 and "Ninja Hunt" from More Fund Comics #1. If anyone can shed any more light on these two stories, I'd appreciate it.

Also, Thomas, did you say that "One Night in the Cold" from Critters 23 was incorporated into The Lizard's Tale in full in the TPB?

And, I'm going to grab the individual issues of UY Vol. 1 to get the backup stories not done by Stan.

Usagi's Ark (featuring story and art by Ken Mitchroney and Stan Sakai) has not been reprinted anywhere since it's publication in Vol 1, issue #22. It is the Space Ark story Stan referred to in his reply.

As far as I have been able to tell, Ninja Hunt has not been reprinted anywhere.

The two page story "One Night in the Cold" was incorporated into the story "The Lizard's Tale", actually starting the story off as the first two pages of the longer story. I never did a side by side comparison to see if the story was completely redrawn or not.

I think you got lucky! I've seen it go well over $100 and $35 pretty recently. But, if you stick with it you can find one under $20, but, it may take a while!

Ghost9, if you can, make it a point to track down "Kami of the Pond" from your list, which can still be obtained fairly quickly and cheaply in the Dark Horse Maverick 2001 issue. It's one of the funniest Usagi stories around and despite its length, one of my absolute favorites. The "moral" of the story is priceless, and its a tale worth passing along to friends and loved ones.

Can't wait to see it reprinted.

I was at the Dallas Comic Con today and saw the More Fund Comics TPB. The UY "Ninja Hunt" story is a one page story about a ninja who had stolen some jewels and was running from Usagi. He tried to hide underwater and breathe through a reed, but Usagi found him and plugged the reed with his finger. And thus, the ninja was caught. Neat little one-pager. Not sure how many of you have this or have read it....
