Question for Stan concerning ltd edition Usagi prints

Post by Steve Hubbell »

I was wondering if you or anyone else can provide information concerning the various limited edition signed and numbered Usagi Yojimbo prints that have been produced?

There were several produced by Fantagraphics Books including the small b/w "Usagi encircled by attackers" print that was included in a pre-packaged set of Fantagraphics issues #1 - 3. And the serigraph print "Sashimono". There was also a silk screen print of "Usagi and Spot" from 1988.

There was the Belguim print which was limited to 25 prints. These, I believe Go said, were produced by the Belgium publisher of Usagi Yojimbo.

There was the 1000 Editions poster of the Book 1 cover art.

Finally, there was the portrait print and the one of Usagi with Gen, Tomoe, and Katsuchi Sensei in the background.

I am seeking information concerning who the publisher was, when the print was released, how many were printed if signed/numbered, dimentions (height and width) as well as brief description, and background info / trivia concerning the print. I am also seeking all of the above info on any other Usagi Yojimbo prints not mentioned.

According to "The Art of Usagi Yojimbo", there was also a limited edition print produced from the image on page 1 of "A Quiet Meal".

Thanks in advance for any and all help...

Abayo,
Steve

The two prints--the Usagi portrait and the one with the images of Gen, Tomoe, and Katsuichi in the background were done with a friend in Vancouver. I don't know if he has a company name. Paul Lau did all the business stuff--soliciting, printing, shipping, etc and I just provided the art. The first print was printed in (I think) 2002 and the latter in 2004. The portrait print had signed and unsigned editions, and the "images" print just had a signed edition. I don't rightly remember, but I think there were about 250 signed and numbered prints of each art.

I also did a couple of prints for sale at cons. The first, of Usagi walking (the first page of A Quiet Meal), had a signed b/w edition of 150 and a hand colored edition of 50. The same goes for the Dragon print--the cover to Fantagraphics UY 13 (the first part of The Dragon Bellow Conspiracy). I'm not sure of the years for these except that they were in the early 1990's.

The Belgian print had an edition of 25 Artists Proofs and a regular edition of (I think) 100.

DH is planning to publish a serigraph of the Art of UY cover in 2005. It will be limited to an edition of 100.

There were also a few posters that were give-aways at cons and signings. They were the 15 anniversary smiling image, the long wraparound cover with many of the UY characters, the very large Polish print featuring the "images" art mentioned above, and the recent Madrid Expocomic print.

I may have forgotten something, so if anyone can fill in the gaps I'd be grateful.

Fantagraphics did an Usagi-Meets-Nilson Groundthumper print for the "Name that Critter" Contest. The standard print was an unlimited edition, but Stan did 33 signed and numbered versions with a blue-colored background for the 33 fans who entered. I've got one of the 33. Let me know if you want me to scan it for placement on the UYD.

Did you mention the Usagi in Armor silkscreen print that Fantagraphics did in (I think) 1990? That one's on the UYD membership page and was FB's 2nd silkscreen.

Stan also did limited prints of the cover to UY Vol 1 #13 and the first page of Blind Swordspig, which features Usagi crossing over a field of grass with dragonflies and clouds in the sky. Very nice piece. These were sold in the mid-80s at the SDCC. Also there were limited (?) color prints of the cover to UY Book 4 Hardcover.

There was also the 15th Anniversary of UY poster, which can be seen in the UYD's 1999 SDCC webpages. But that was a poster and not a print...

Lastly, about the rarest print I can think of is the Albedo Nr 2 Cover serigraphs. Details on these in the Albedo NR 2 Webpage. If I can think of more I'll let you know. There are more that I have somewhere in my collection. Exteremly rare prints that Stan did over the years. I've gotta go digging through the garage to find them though.

There was the "Emerald City Comic Con" give-away poster in 2004 of Usagi Yojimbo invading Seattle.

YES, please do. Is this the same image of Usagi, Nilson Groundthumper and Hermie which was previously posted on the Dojo web-site?

That is the serigraph print "Sashimono" (meaning "Banners"), the name of which was mentioned in "The Art of Usagi Yojimbo".

How do we go about ordering one of these when they become available? Will they be listed through Diamond's Preview catalog or just through Dark Horse?

I'm sure it will be offered through Diamond. I was contacted by DH about the print in December. It will probably be offered the first half of the year. I'll let the Dojo know when.

I converted the old Nilson and Hermy website. It's now here:

http://www.usagiyojimbo.com/sakai/other ... hermy.html

The limited edition print appears in the Usagi/Nilson crossover page...speaking of which, Stan how close are we to this inevitable meeting??? The information reported here was actually obtained back at the 1988 SDCC...quite a long time ago. Any updates? :-)

Belgian Print

Post by emedclimb »

hello stan,
i've purchased a copy of the "Belgian" print from you. At the bottom, in pencil, it has "E.A. 13/15". Any idea of what this means? Thanks and I hope you're finding some time to relax from your busy schedule. ken

I think it means "Edition of the Artist". In the US, it would be " Artist Proof".
