I'm in Japan

Post by Stan Sakai »

We arrived at Narita Airport yesterday, and are staying in the Ginza district. We walked around our old haunts yesterday, but could not find the Godzilla statue we came across 11 years ago.

We are going to Meiji Shrine today, and, maybe, the Sword Museum.

It is raining this morning, but was beautiful at Meiji Shrine yesterday. Managed to do some sketching there.

Hope you are having fun! :D

Had any Yokai encounters in Japan yet? Hope you didn't forget your copy of Matt Alt and Hiroko Yoda's Yokai Survival Guide! :D

I remember after UK film critic Mark Kermode got back from a recent trip to Japan, he said that they have cakes everywhere. Is that your experience? If so, are they good cakes? IIRC, he said that you can get it from vending machines, just like nearly anything else.

While we're on the subject, here's a pretty good book about Japan that you can read in PDF form for free (The Kindle 2 just got native PDF support with the most recent update, so that's how I've been reading it):

Every year SCAD takes a small group of students to Tokyo (they also have an annual European trip). Each day we would do a few hours of class time, then there will be an outing in the afternoon--to the Miyazaki Museum, Akihabara, Kamakura, Asakusa, etc. I used a connection I have at TMS, an animation studio, to arrange tours to their studio and to Studio Ghibli which I am really excited about.
Dave Allen Duncan is one of the students also partaking of the trip to Japan for the Savannah College of Art and Design. He has been posting a daily record of his trip on his "gobnobble" blog.

That morning television cartoon (whatever the heck it was) looked HILARIOUS. Then again, I'm sure Blue's Clues looks just as bizarre to the Japanese.

We're having a wonderful time. It was raining yesterday, so we went to the Science Museum in Ueno Park. Great dinosaurs and exhibit on early Japan.

It may rain Saturday, so instead of going to Nikko, we may have to go to the Ghibli Museum after all.

One of the things I wanted to do was eat okonomiyaki at a restaurant. We did that last night.

Looks like the weather in Japan is mirroring here then...! Always good to hear you're enjoying yourself Stan, despite the downpours...
