This is excellent information... Stan, do you agree? Can we run a headline on the Dojo proclaiming UY as the longest-running indie comic in the world when it does overtake Cerebus? Actually, technically it currently is since Cerebus is no longer in publication.

Also noticed some competition from Femforce, Comics Revue, and Spawn (in terms of the # of issues) that could weaken the claim. You could throw Spawn out since Usagi was started in 1984. CR doesn't stick to one title...and Femforce....not as many issues as Usagi (I think with UY at over 180 now)...and was technically started in 1985!

Any more competition? What about TMNT? I know there were significant breaks there, creative team changes, etc....but we do know that TMNT preceded UY by a few months in 1984. Has anyone ever counted up the # of single issues for TMNT across all publishers (including Archie). Can you even call TMNT an "independent" comic anymore?

For TMNT, I think the number of issues is greater but spread across different publishers. Certainly for the original b/w series the counts are:

Series 1 (Mirage) - 61
Series 2 (Mirage) - 13
Series 3 (Image) - 23
Series 4 (Mirage) - 30 (to date)

Plus there are two series of Tales of the TMNT:

Series 1 - 7
Series 2 - 70 (will end on this issue later this year)

I never read or collected the Archie stuff so I don't know the issue counts there.

Well, the key is that Usagi will be the longest running independent comic to be published continuously. TMNT was going on hiatus between issues in its first year.

And TMNT certainly can't compete for longest stretch by a single creative team. Eastman and Laird dropped off after issue #11 of the first volume.

to be fair, they (eastman and laird) also went into the multi billion marketing room and had tons of stuff to do about their creation which most people forget to think about...they also rejoined forces for the fiftieth issue of volume one and layed out the following twelve stories....one should also consider that the two didn't get along too harmonicly after all their adventures of togetherness and the preassure of success, so their seemingly short carrer of writing and drawing together on the tmnt series as a team should not be judged too quick in my mind....I guess you weren't going that far anyway but people should'nt forget about these things when comparing tmnt and usagi for instance...

I'm not attaching any judgments to Kevin and Peter. I'm merely pointing out that they are not contenders for this race because they do not meet the qualifications.
