War of the Independents - July 2008

Post by Steve Hubbell »

This sounds kind of interesting......
The 2 links at the bottom provide a litle more information.
http://www.comicspace.com/daveryan/
Update: Wed, Jan. 30th, 2008: After reviewing my submission, Diamond won't solicite the War of the Independents unless they recieve sign permision forms from all of the creators. This, of course will delay the release, unfortunately.

Update: Friday, Jan. 18th, 2008: Bob Burden has given the thumbs up for The Flaming Carrot to the War of the Independents. Look for him in issue #3!!

Update: Thursday, Jan. 17th, 2008: Ethan Van Sciver has given the thumbs up for his Cyberfrog to take part in the War of the Independents! Look for Cyberfrog in issue #3!

Update: Sunday, Jan. 13th, 2008: Stanley Sakai has generously included Usagi Yojimbo to the War. Keep an eye out for a possible cover from him on issue 3 as well as Usagi Yojimbo in that issue.

Update: Friday, Dec. 7th, 2007: War of the Independents #1, coming out July 2008 will have 3 variant covers. Two normal covers, one done by myself and the other by Anthony Castrillo. There will be a Rare "Chase" cover done by Amanda Conner featuring her creation The Pro with various others, in I'm sure a compromising situation! lol

Update: Tuesday, Dec. 4rd, 2007: SCUD THE DISPOSABLE ASSASSIN (Rob Schrab) has also gotten back to me about having Scud appear which is fantastic! Rob has been a long time staple in the indie field (and apparently really hard to get a hold of, lol)

Update: Monday, Dec. 3rd, 2007: The incomparable Evan Dorkin has thrown in Milk and Cheese to the fray of the War. I had contacted Evan when I began putting together this project and we spoke briefly about it at last years MoCCA. Milk and Cheese will make an phenomenal addition to issue 3 which will be a comedic issue consisting of Zippy the Pinhead Clown, Too Much Coffee Man, Cerebus, Bone, Milk and Cheese as well as a few other light-hearted characters.

War of the Independents will be an ongoing series coming out July 2008. The first 6 issues will be the biggest independent crossover ever and continue and a hub for the Independent Universe!!

Were you actually asked to contribute artwork or the use of Usagi in the story, or is the comment about you "generously including" Usagi in the story a complete fabrication?

I was asked, but with the logistics of lack of time to draw the cover, all the people involved and the approval process for the script and art, and the contract, I decided not to participate.

From what description I read of the characters involved in issue #3, a cover by you featuring Usagi and those characters would have been pretty cool. Or was the cover planned as a group project with a number of creators all adding their own characters to the drawing, similar to Critters #1?

What I still have not figured out from what I read about the project is if you and the other creators were just allowing your characters to be drawn by the artist doing the book or if each creator was drawing the main segments that their characters appeared in.

Definitely a very ambitious project, especialy if each creator was contributing artwork.

I would have done the cover myself, and would license Usagi to be used in the interior drawn by someone else. To have every creator draw his/her own character, even on just the cover, would be too expensive in shipping expenses and time.

Now I'm bummed out! That would have been such an awesome cover....

(Then again, after receiving an email from Erik at Enigma, I was overly excited anyways!)

I picked up a copy of this the other day when I saw it on the shelves and I just noticed there's an Usagi Yojimbo on the cover. On the upper right corner in between Grendel and Flavor Flav. Don't see any Usagi on the interior art pages though.

They did ask again, and I consented to allow them to use Usagi as drawn by someone else. I have not seen the book.
