The entire Senso 6-issue mini series is out. It went through a lot of rewrites. Characters were added, others taken out. Gen had gotten married and widowed, but this subplot had to be edited out. One cameo that I was disappointed did not make it on the page was Zato-Ino and his daughter Sachi. Their parts had to be replaced by Tomoe's husband Buichi.

Hey Brendan H. Wright, I signed and sketched on 1725 tip-in signature plates for UY Saga vol 3 hardcover. Expect them Friday.



As usual, I did one tip-in with a full sketch on the reverse side. I actually got the sketched one in my comps for UY Book 28. I sold it to some lucky guy at the San Diego Con.

TBT: The Festival International de la Bande Dessinee d'Angouleme opened today. It is the second largest comics festival in Europe with attendance about 250,000, so it is much larger than the San Diego Con but is spread thoughout the entire small town.

i don't know if Stan intended it but that waiter reminds me of caricatures of the Tintin creator Herge that pop up in Franco-Belgian comics.

I apologize for posting here but I have to say Wow! Just saw the sneak peeks of issues 145-147! I must say I'm looking forward to these issues! And it seems that kitsune and chizu get off on the wrong foot! Wonder what kitsune did to push her buttons? It was cool to see how Stan works and the process that goes into making each panel and page. Thank you Stan for all of the hard work you do.

Did the art for Usagi Yojimbo Saga volume 5.


rough pencils with 2H mechanical lead on 4 ply, 500 series Strathmore bristol.


Finished pencils, even with perspective lines drawn to vanishing point. The decorations above the doorway will be on the hardcover only as the top fifth of the art is cut off in the trade.

Do you trace your finish pencils over the roughs? You would never know the roughs were there!

The roughs are there on the paper.


inked with Badger Black Opaque, old formula, and Koh-i-noor Art Pen.

Mr. Sakai, Sensei, does the old Badger Black Opaque Ink ever clog the Art Pen? Have you tried other inks inside the Art Pen?

I have tried other inks, like the new Badger. Many clog the pen. I am still looking as I have only about another year's worth of ink.

Are the pencils done in the same paper than the inks? (just curious)

Yes, Santiago Casares. Everything is done on one board.

BTW, Love the top painting in the cover (those horses look awesome!)

The horses at the top will be cut off for the trade paperback edition and will only seen on the hardcovers.

The ones I use the most are Aquaelles or something like that. I got them in France.

Do you have a reason for no dots on Usagi's clothes? Would they mess up the composition? I love the movement in this piece.

I think for color pieces like this one, the dots are redundant. It just does not need them.

The Usagi Yojimbo Saga #6 won't be out until next year, but I've already sent in the cover for it.

Ink and watercolor on 4-ply, 500 series cold press Strathmore bristol.


I based this new painting on my cover for UY 114


Pencils with HB mechanical pencil lead. The image will be cut off the top 20% for the trade paperback, so those two running lizards will only be on the hardcover.


Inked outline using Koh-i-noor Art Pen and Badger Black Opaque ink (old formula).


The image was frisket-ed off, and backgrounds painted with watercolor.


Paper frisket was removed.

Finished! Colors are a bit off, though.
