Dear Stan,

Wishing your family the best.

UYDers,
Comic Con Revolution Ontario is still listing Stan as a guest and on three panels. Don't know if he is able to go but here are the three panels Stan is scheduled to be on:

Spotlight on Stan Sakai
Hosted by N/A. Featuring Stan Sakai
Saturday 5/19 11:30am - 12:30pm, Ballroom B
Stan Sakai began his career by simply lettering comic books as he perfected his art and began working in the industry. He wrote and illustrated The Adventures of Nilson Groundthumper and Hermy; a comic series with a medieval setting, influenced by Sergio Aragones's Groo the Wanderer. The characters first appeared in Albedo #1 in 1984, and were subsequently featured in issues of Critters, GrimJack, Amazing Heroes and Furrlough. Join us for this spectacular spotlight on Stan Sakai, who became famous with the creation of Usagi Yojimbo, the epic saga of Miyamoto Usagi, a samurai rabbit living in late-sixteenth and early-seventeenth-century Japan.

Storytellers: How Scripts and Art Come Together
Hosted by Beatriz Valenzuela. Featuring Stan Sakai, Stephan Franck, Howard Chaykin
Saturday 5/19 3:30pm - 4:30pm, Ballroom B
The process of a writer is unique to each one, some draw thumbnails to plot their storylines, some break them down into points, and some write the story to the artist's layouts. Join Stephan Franck, Howard Chaykin and Stan Sakai as they discuss their processes and how to decide which one works for you.

Fanbase Press Presents: Who Let the Animals Out…in Comics?
Hosted by Michele Brittany. Featuring Derek Fridolfs, Mike Kunkel, Stan Sakai, Matthew Clark, and Sebastian Kadlecik
Sunday 5/20 11:30am - 12:30pm, 103
Often associated with humor, animals have a lengthy history in comics; however, in addition to humorous stories, animals can also provide a venue for exploring difficult topics such as violence, species blending, and morality/ethics. Led by Fanbase Press Editorials Manager Michele Brittany, join our panelists as they discuss how animals allow them to explore themes and tell stories in comics.

That Sunday panel is news to me, but I will be at all three events.

Saturday's Spotlight is my usual one of drawing and telling how I create comics. If you have any suggestions to update it, please let me know. They promised me a document reader or something to project what I'm drawing onto a screen so I don't have to stand and draw on big sheets with my back to the audience.

Julie and Daniel will also be at this con.

I'm glad I applied for a Professional Pass for CC Revolution after all. :D
I wasn't sure I'd be going, but I guess I better attend now.

I'm not sure what your usual presentation is, but I enjoyed the one you did at the JANM where you recreated the steps based on a published page (page 1 of the very first Usagi story): script, thumbnail layout and final layout, with your thoughts on why you blocked it out the way you did.

Since you've been nominated so many times for lettering awards, I'd be interested in learning a bit more on what goes into lettering both your work (where you can design your speech balloons into your layout), as well as lettering other people's work (where you have to letter into whatever space they decide to give you). Maybe those two scenarios really aren't very different from a lettering standpoint, but I'd be interested in learning more, regardless.

That's a good idea about including the lettering in the presentation. Hand lettering is getting to be a lost art in comic books. It might be nice to show what an Aames lettering guide is and the steps it takes to do lettering and balloon placements.

Suggestion: You often talk about how you physically create the comic (basic outline/script, thumbnails to figure out pacing, loose pencils, details). It would be interesting to learn more about how you incorporate research into your storytelling. For example, using the example of the latest Usagi Mini-series "The Hidden:"

1. What things influenced you to create this storyline? (I guess this is the old question, "What inspires you?" But by giving people the inspiration behind The Hidden (or any story), ties it into the current storyline where people can jump in now, and takes something abstract and grounds it to a real-life example. And if you show any of your not yet published artwork from The Hidden the people feel like they got an even more special treat for coming to your panel.)
2. Once you had the idea, what are the next steps you do to start creating your script/story outline?
3. What sources did you use to do your research? People, places, types of Googled searches. i.e. When you were working on Yokai, you asked the internet, some comics sites helped spread the word, and Matt Alt (Yokai Attack!) emailed you. Those are cool stories.
4. Some examples of how research that changed the plot, how a something is drawn, etc.
5. Examples of when you choose to ignore history/research and go forward because it tells a better story. Or how do you decide what stays in and what stays out of a story? The editing choices are what make a story and I find that very interesting.
6. How do you decide how many issues it takes to tell a multi-issue story?
7. Why do you choosing to share the research at the end of comic floppies or graphic novel collections?

The potential problem with this suggestion is people love watching you create art. What works so well with your standard presentation is that we get to watch you create our familiar characters out of thin air, you tell some background stories about them, and lucky fans get to take home some original Stan Sakai art. Talking too much about script creation vs. the art creation will not be as visually captivating as seeing you draw. But if you bring some preview pages from The Hidden, that could help provide the visual captivation we all want. (Yes, my secret agenda is to see more The Hidden artwork now  )

Of course, if it ain't broke, don't fix it is another philosophy.

Regardless, glad that we will be able to see Daniel, Julie, and you a few weeks. Peace, maka

Emi has a photo-shoot on the Saturday, but may join us Sunday.

Thanks for the suggestions, Maka. The problem with describing research is that it is so varied and may take years, though not continuously. I will try to touch on this though. Research certainly has changed my story, and I will try to get into that as well.

Unfortunately, Stan will have to cancel his Comic Con Revolution appearance. He's in Croatia and said he's unable to access the Dojo right now, so asked me to update you guys.

I guess I shouldn't have shipped you that package of Usagi items to get signed. :P

In all seriousness, I hope he's having too much fun in Croatia and it's not family related.
