Old School Comic-con

Post by cynlee »

Hey Stan!

I was cleaning my classroom the last day of school and found a bunch of pics I took at my second or third comic-con-- I think 1988, though it could have been 1987-- You, Donna Barr, and Ken Mitchroney (spelling is wrong) were giving a panel on cartooning/drawing. It was definitely the year during or after the year when U.Y. was on the volunteer shirts.

This was back when the Comic-con was at the old place, and it looked like a comic book convention, not one long Corporate-sponsored commercial  !

Those were taken at the Old Convention Center, all right. I would guess it was 1989, since there is a copy of UY Book 2 on the table. There weren't any backings for our booths, so I came up with those canvas backdrops on PVC frames. Sergio's plans for our booths were a lot more elaborate with an enclosed lounge area, a couch, and a refrigerator. He even drew up schematics and details of how the 2x4 lumber would be bolted together. It was like a palace. Well, he did study to become an architect.

I used to do an annual drawing panel with Jim Groat, Steve Gallacci, and others.

Yeah-- '89-- 'cause that was the school year (after the con) that my class did their comic and you had come to visit... (sometime between '89 and '90...)

But you guys didn't get the fancy room, right? Cause I remember that place, and I don't remember anything like that!!!

We would have had to hire a U-Haul to truck it down to the con. Not to mention the half day it would take to put the entire thing together. And trying to organize a dozen cartoonists to work on a project--especially one that requires physical labor--well, it was not going to happen. But whenever Sergio comes up with some scheme, we always bring up his San Diego Con booth project.
