A side note on Chizu (and Stan will have to confirm since it was so many years ago), but I may have inadvertently saved her life. I was meeting Stan at Gary's Corner Bookstore about 8 years ago or so, right around the time when we were doing the first UY t-shirt. I did a video interview of Stan at Gary's (which I NEED to get on this site one day). After the interview, Stan and I were talking about Grasscutter and an upcoming Chizu story arc, which would later become Grasscutter 2. After Stan told me Chizu gets run down pretty hard in the storyline, I told him that he'd better not kill her off... he turned to me and said, "hmm, I'd better change the ending to that storyline then!" And who do we have dying in that story instead...another Kunoichi named Saru... Fortunately Chizu did not have to share the same fate as her bro (which STILL gets to me to this day!!). So Stan, was it your original intent to kill Chizu off??? I don't think I ever followed up on that (or maybe I did and forgot..getting senile in my old age)

Jei picks up some much needed votes at the last moment. Clearly, Gen is the big favorite with Chizu and Jotoro lagging far behind him. After that, we have a close tie amongst Sasuke, Tomoe, Jei, and Kitsune. Sasuke is still the big surprise here, especially since he hasn't been given much space in Usagi yet. I guess we know who the fans want to see more of now. Ishida, another relatively recent favorite, minds his own business toward the rear of the top scores list.

Beyond those top scores, the voting results get a little less reliable. Keep in mind that all it takes is two hardcore fans of Peasant #3 from "The Silk Fair" to give that character ten points. Earning 11 or more points requires more fans (and therefore a better representation of all Usagi fans) to vote for you. Still, any character earning more than five points has to have at least two fans, and that's still saying something. Anything below a five can easily be a statistical fluke, so the fact that Kenichi has four times as many votes as Noriko doesn't really mean much here.


So there it is. Any thoughts on the results?

Incidentally, voting has ended. Please do not submit your votes if you haven't already. Once the next issue of Usagi comes out, it could easily change some of our views on existing characters and introduce new ones. All of this will make a jumbled mess out of this poll as we're left to wonder how many people would have voted for some new character if they hadn't already voted prior to the new issue.

I'm actually surprised that Kitsune didn't get a higher ranking. She's always been one of my favorites. As serious as the tone of the comic can get sometimes, it's nice to have her come in as a bit of comic relief. And her personality bouncing off of Tomoe's in "The Thief and the Lotus Scroll" was priceless!

perhaps Gen shoud have been out of the competition, obviously he is more than a second role ! it could let us vote for another character who really needs our support !

My favorite character is the Snake Lord Lord Hijiki. I have the Usagi Yojimbo Rpg (fizion System) He's totally sneaky,backstabbing, and will do anything to get what he wants.

The Snake Lord would be Hebi, as far as I know the only non-mammal character so far; although I think 've seen a frog/toad-like character some time ago, but only as a passer-by in a crowd scene;

I really enjoyed the skunk story; that would be an animal I'd like to see, but that would fire the old "Do-they-have-tails" discussion again.
