GREAT issue!
Though I was disappointed not to see any hint of Jei in this issue, I thought the storytelling was fantastic. I love that it's another perspective on the same events from the previous issue. Very creative and fascinating!
I never liked this new love interest prior to this issue. She felt like just another of Usagi's careless crushes preventing him from committing himself to Tomoe, but she really took the opportunity to shine in this issue...numerous times.
I do feel that she needed to be "removed" in order to avoid further romantic complication, but I wouldn't be surprised if her memory casts a haunting shadow on Usagi for at least a short while.
But really, what's up with Usagi falling for every woman he meets? Get it together, rabbit!

Poor Usagi, through the emotional wringer yet once more.
I wonder what became of all that money Mayumi had when Shizukiri met up with her. He always seems to get by but I worry about Usagi's fiscal well being. What would he do with enough dough to open a business. Bury Mayumi in style most likely or some such thing. I hope he at least goes and gets a good night's sleep in some nice inn.

I started to like Mayumi when she got pissed off at Shizukiri and decided she would try killing him.... after he hit her - last three panels on page 10. I thought she might have enough spunk to stay alive - but, no she was doomed.
edit: I should add that I smiled hugely when Usagi, after delivering the killing blow to Shizukiri whirrled around and gave him another shot in the kidneys! heh heh that one was for Mayumi I guess.
edit 2: Ok another thing I really enjoyed was when the slimy informant pulled his hat up imitating Usagi's ears.

I just read it, awesome issue. Totally unexpected that it didn't actually pick up at the cliffhanger ending from 101 until page 18! To tell you the truth I was way off. I knew Usagi would use the shinobi katana to defend himself, but I thought for sure something would happen and Mayumi would get the opportunity to kill Shizu herself. To be honest I wasn't totally pleased with the ending, seemed too easy a way out for Usagi. To have her live would have REALLY gotten things complicated (or reasons Shaxper pointed out) but then maybe that's all in the alternate ending??? Would have been great to see how things would have turned out. An abrupt end for Mayumi. Hmmm.. oh well. We do have to get on with the Jei storyline. If not Shizu, then Jei would have certainly found a way to use her to gain an advantage over Usagi, just like he did with Jotaro years ago.

Wow. What a great issue. I really love how Stan was able to weave the stories together. It was great to see it from the other perspective. I'm very glad that Usagi didn't end up with Mayumi. I never liked her as a romantic figure for him and it just seemed too forced. They just met each other and hardly knew each other and I didn't really believe that Usagi had any affections for her. I like to belive that usagi never had any feelings for her and was just trying to be nice.
The only thing I was bummed out about was that Shizukiri's stare was never explained. Does he have telepathy? People seem to get a headache when he stares at them and it was never explained if he had some power. Anyways, great story and I really enjoyed it.

mmm... ya - good point. When he stared down that big samurai it crossed my mind that maybe Usagi wouldn't end up killing him. It seemed like character development... which is odd in someone you're about to kill off - shrug. Too bad I really like Shuzukiri - you know, as a bad guy. I really like the design of him. Very striking and recognisable... and deliciously nasty!

I really enjoyed this issue.
To comment on some points made:
Love interests: I never like Mayumi as a love interest. Actually never even thought of her as one until this issue. She was too 'needy' and to be honest, kind of bugged me. I thought she was slightly annoying. I think the only thing Usagi felt for her was maybe friendship.
The evil eye: I think Shizukiri is just that bad BADWORD. He is one tough customer and I think Usagi would have lost in the shape he was in if it wasn't for Mayumi. She died saving Usagi's live.
The second cut: I liked the fact that Usagi turned around and gave him another good chop too.
All in all, another excellent issue.
Yesterday I was at the comic shop while the owner sorted the comics and we all sat around talking comics and I may have converted another person over to Usagi as well. My local comic shop now orders 4 copies of Usagi Yojimbo. Before me, he wasn't getting any.

I totally agree with what you are sayig. Your statement about Mayumi was spot on and the way I felt about her myself.MikeM wrote:
