Usagi Auction piece
Here's the piece that I did for the fundraiser for Stan Sakai's wife Sharon. I am not clear on the details of how and when things are being auctioned, but once I know I will post the details.
Stan and Sharon are great people and I have read every issue of Usagi since it started so doing this art was a pleasure.

Completed Usagi Yojimbo piece. Going to submit it to Dark Horse and see what happens. In the meantime, the original inked image and a print of this will be on it's way to the auction benefiting Stan Sakai and his family.

Stan Sakai 's Usagi Yojimbo is celebrating a 30th anniversary and Dark Horse is putting out a pinup book including artists from all over. This is my submission in ink (hopefully it'll make it into the book). I'll add color to it before I send it along. Then send in this version (maybe with some Copic graytones) for an auction to help Stan and his wife with some medical issues.

I've finished Jei Usagi. It was a lot of fun and a learning experience. It's interesting what happens when you try speaking someone else's visual dialect...in this case, cartoon anthropomorphic animal samurai. Hope you like it!

I was playing with the leaves and trying to just let the drawing flow which is what a drawing becomes when you get out of the way! Few fans probably know that Patrick Rabbit made his debut to the world stage in Usagi #7 published by Fantagraphics long ago. Usagi also appeared in my Frank the Unicorn comic decades ago.

Here is a great moody interpretation of Usagi by the great moody artist Jeff Lemire. While he is currently writing "Justice League United" for DC to be unleashed in April, Jeff is known for such personal books as "Sweet Tooth", "Essex County Trilogy" and "The Nobody". To see more into the mind of Lemire, his blog awaits: http://jefflemire.blogspot.com/

Stan Sakai’s Benefit Book
Dark Horse will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo with the release of the oversized hardcover benefit book, “The Sakai Project: Artists Celebrate Thirty Years of Usagi Yojimbo.” (July release.)
Stan Sakai is one of the best cartoon storytellers in the business. His fabulous comic book, Usagai Yojimbo, a story of masterless samurai in feudal Japan, is one of the longest published creator-owned comic book around. Stan Sakai is simply a legend and a great inspiration for all of us writer-artist working in the trenches. And on top of that, Stan is also one of the nicest human being on the planet.
For those who don’t know, a great misfortune has fallen upon Stan Sakai and his family. Stan’s wife, Sharon Sakai suffers from a debilitating illness that required an extended hospital stay and convalescence. She requires 24-hour home care and medications that exceed their insurance coverage. Dark Horse Comics in conjunction with the Comic Art Professional Society is producing the “The Sakai Project: Artists Celebrate Thirty Years of Usagi Yojimbo” benefit book, with all proceeds will go to Stan and Sharon Sakai.
Here is my contribution to this worthy book, my rendition of Stan’s greatest character, Usagi Yojimbo. It’s still work in progress but I hope to have it inked and finished by this weekend.

Here is an original comic page from a comic book crossover between "Crossfire" and "DNA Agents" drawn by longtime CAPS member Dan Spiegle. Dan created "Crossfire" with writer and CAPS co-founder Mark Evanier. Dan's career in comics started in 1949 drawing the "Hopalong Cassidy" comic strip, and later went on to draw many television and movie based comics such as "Maverick", "Spin & Marty", "The Rifleman", "Sea Hunt", and "Indiana Jones". He also worked on popular comic characters such as Batman, Jonah Hex, Teen Titans, and Blackhawk. To do a Google Images search on his name will reveal a stunning career. We are excited to have a piece by our pal Dan to sell for the benefit of our other pal Stan Sakai.

I did this illustration for Dark Horse's Sakai Project benefit book. Stan Sakai is the creator of Usagi Yojimbo. Due to his wife's medical condition, the couple need some support and help. The oversized HC will be on sale late July with all proceeds going to them. I'm also donating the original to the online auction that will be held to sell the artwork from the book. Please buy a copy of the book and if you like my illustration, then buy it when they hold the auction. All money goes to help this great couple.

Stan Sakai Charity Project
Comic creator Stan Sakai has been going through some tough time as of late. His wife Sharon has medical needs and he recently lost a grandson, so paying medical bills should be the last thing on his mind right now. Many artists have donated a piece of artwork to auction off in hopes of raising money to help out the Sakai family. This here is my contribution. I chose to portray Stan's character, Usagi Yojimbo as a samurai. I think the red mask kind of pulled me in on this one.
If you are an artist who would like to help out, or if you just want to make a donation go here. To check out Stan Sakai's work, go here. Stan will also be at the MSU Comics Forum this weekend in Lansing, MI
I sure hope that my drawing can help out some.

Usagi Yojimbo: Rabbit Bodyguard
In the last five years or so I’ve been watching more and more Asian films. A lot of it stems from the lack of contemporary quality film and honestly just a different world-view on storytelling. I grew up watching a lot of Hong Kong cinema but never really had the exposure to the serious dramas of japanese Samurai films. It’s like when you have a dream and you see things you’ve never seen before; a whole realized world just waiting for you to enjoy.
Anyway, a lot that love is also found in Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo character. A comic that has been around since the 80s. So why did I spend a bit of time painting him? As it goes, with many comic book colleagues, a sickness in the family can wipe out ones savings where insurance (if they’re lucky to have any) doesn’t cover cost. A trend lately is crowd-sourcing help in these matters. So, this is my submission for the STAN SAKAI PROJECT to help with his wife’s medical bills. I mean, let’s face it, comic book people who are lucky to be married, owe so much to those who prop them up it isn’t funny. Hopefully, this submission makes it into the final book and hopefully you buy it. I think Dark Horse is releasing it…so stay tuned.
