Question about the San Diego Con..

Hey all.. I have a question that I was hoping somebody could help me with.

I've never been to the San Diego con, but am planning on taking the wife and daughter there this year... Is the Sensei going to be there for sure? I am a huge comic fan, but the honest truth is that I would be be travelling clear across the country for the chance to meet Mr. Sakai, and hopefully get a sketch.

Also, what kind of Dojo happenings usually go on there? I saw the pictures of past SDCC's with the Dojo members, do you all usually do more than just take a picture together? Despite being new, I'd love to hang out for a while with some other Usagi fans..

Thanks in advance for any help!

Stan will be at the SDCC no matter what. In the history of his con going's I believe he missed only one SDCC (Stan correct me if I'm wrong). About the only way Stan would not appear is if the Con itself were cancelled

We'd like to do more Dojo stuff with Stan at the SDCC, similar to the stuff we've done at other cons. Thing is, Stan is typically busy after hours and this makes it difficult if not impossible. But I always try! Stan, if you're reading this, let me know! Last time a few of us met up at the UY panel on Thursday and sponsored a UYD T-Shirt giveaway contest. VikingBabe handed out UY trading cards, with several white Usagi cards mixed inside. Stan announced after the panel was over that those who drew the white cards could get a free t-shirt from VB on their way out!

If you have any suggestions, let me know!

The "problem" with San D Con is the size of the thing.
Sure, you've got 4 days, and if you pre-register you also get a couple hours on Wed evening, too, to shop.
However, by the time you get through the whole exhibitor's floor, all the panels you have to choose from, gaming or watching videos/anime if you want...well, trying to do much during the day of the Con itself is pretty hard.
Also, not all the UY members are there all 4 days. So that puts limitations on when we can all meet.

As for UY members, sure, Stan is busy, but it seems to me the rest of us could either consider a breakfast meet up or maybe some dinner thing?

The breakfast meet up one morning might be the easiest, provided everyone doesn't mind getting up a little early.
Even if you are not staying at the Mariott, they have a coffee and pastry shop and tables all around that make a great location for something like this. The shuttle buses run there, and it's close to the Con, which is why it's a great spot. You don't need reservations and even on Saturday morning, it's not too congested to find tables.
Or a place in the area could be selected.

My Lord of the Rings fanclub group has held dinner Moots on Preview Night for the past couple years. That's an option. The harder part about dinners is sometimes the evening events or other plans everyone makes.

But if it could work out, I would love for the chance to spend a little while the UY Dojo member outside of chance meet ups at the Con, or the moments for the photo shoot.

That sounds like a great idea, Kim. I've always held out for Stan to participate, and that is sorta why we have never had one like with some of the others shows (like Fanime). But I'd be down for a breakfast gathering or dinner. So why don't we do this... let's see what kind of interest we can generate on this board. If the interest level is good, we can schedule a meeting. Let us know if you prefer breakfast or dinner. Heck, maybe I'll send out a mass email or set up a poll....
