Have a peek at this guy's site: http://www.lambiek.net/
European comics have followed the "graphic novel" concept for a while-- often aimed at an adult market (that cat detective Ziritiron shared is an example), usually in a 8"X10", 30-50 page format with a story entirely contained in one book. Flap around the 'net for Suske en Wiske, Buck Danny, and Tintin for examples of semi-juvenile works (ah, the advantages of family in Europe...). They are a little less distinctive in terms of art style than the Japanese, too-- if you just look at a words-free panel of a European comic, it might not obviously be from Europe as viewed by a North American, whereas the Japanese stuff is usually pretty easy to spot.
