Go Nagai.

Speak that name in Japan, and you'll get one of two reactions.

On the one hand, people will smile and say you have great tastes in manga.

On the OTHER hand, some people will grimace and act disgusted at the name.

That's because Go Nagai is the most controvesial manga-ka's in Japan. Not even Legend of the Overfiend creator Toshio Maeda causes as much mixed reaction as Nagai-san.

Outside of Japan, Nagai is little known, mostly due to censorship. Nagai was one of the first manga-ka to use extreme violence and eroticism in shonen manga, which not only brought the wrath of the PTA (yes, they have one there, to), but of Manga's most coveted creator, Osamu Tezuka (who privately expressed disgust in the trend).

Its a shame to. Because Go Nagai is one of the most inventive manga-kas in the business. He singlehandedly invented the giant mecha and magic girl genres in manga and anime.

However, he is most famous for his creation, Devilman. Devilman has a cult following like none other in Japan. Anything that has to do with Devilman is an event in Japan.

If you have read or seen anything by Nagai, please reply. This genius should not go ignored in teh american market.

i love devilman - only seen the only 2 anime episodes.
Should look for the manga during the summer

I like Devilman and Cutey Honey, but I really haven't actually gotten to read any of his actual manga. I've only seen his creations as anime.

I have read the first volume of Devilman thanks to a guy I used to know.

I have also read volumes 2-4 of this fantastic manga. If by reading, you mean looking at all the art, and trying not to cry because I can't read Japanese.

I have the fifth and final volume as well, but have not ever looked inside. Hey, I don't want to spoil EVERYTHING for myself.

Well... Thanks to some sites I've looked at, I know how it ends anyway, but still...

I also have the first five volumes of the Amon series, written by Nagai, and illustrated by Yuu Kinutani. I have read the first, thanks to some translations I found online, and the others, well, the whole staring at the art and trying not to cry applies to those as well.

I have the second volume of Neo-Devilman. (Have not been able to procure the first volume as of yet.) It looks amazing. By the way, how long is this series? I think it's three volumes, isn't it?

I have the first Devilman OAV on VHS released by Dark Image Entertainment. (And it's SUBBED!!!) I also have an HK fansub (Albeit with a terrible localization...) of the Amon - Apocalypse of Devilman OAV.

I believe a new Devilman series is currently being serialized in Japan, Amon - Mokushiroku. I can't wait to get ahold of this.

All that aside, I have some questions for some more knowledgeable Devilman fans.

How many versions of volume 1 are there? I have seen two versions, and one has 36 more pages than the other in the beginning of the book, which shows how the demons lived before the Ice Age. Are there other versions of the other Devilman books as well?

Exactly how does Amon (By Nagai and Kinutani.) fit into the Devilman continuity? It doesn't make sense to me. It seems like Record of Lodoss War all over again.............

Well, it's nice to see that there are other fans of Devilman as well. I have to admit, I never expected to see any here, though.

Anyway, it's a terrible shame how grossly underappreciated Mr. Nagai's brilliant manga is outside of Japan. It sickens me, really.
