It is really hard to judge a multi-part story from the first issue, but so far, the story is jumping off with some nice twists...

We are introduced to the bad-a** cousin of Tomoe Ame (who seems to literally beat Tomoe during sword practice).

I'm real curious about the significance of the berries the guy hunting in the beginning stumbled upon. I'm pretty sure they are not the same berries as in Sergio Aragonés' Groo: The Most Intelligent Man in the World. I also had to laugh when he said he thought he broke his...

And of course, there is the first cliff-hanger ending for the "treasure of the Mother of Mountains" story-line... I'm already impatient for the next issue. I sure hope Dark Horse Comics is finally done releasing their Sin City reprints and are back to putting everything else out on schedule and that I don't have to wait two or three months for the next issue of Usagi yojimbo...

Abayo...

This looks to be a truly awesome storyline. Tomoe's cousin Nuriko looks like a real b****. But that was over five years ago so I wonder what ever became of her and why we haven't seen her before...intriguing, but it was disappointing to see Tomoe get beaten so easily!!!

I wonder if Stan will dabble a bit in the would-be Tomoe/Usagi romance in this series.....

Well, the Usagi/Tomoe thing has to happen one of these days, even if it's just a minor suggestion. Heck I'd take anything at this point, even a freaking kiss on the cheek. I've been waiting patiently for what now, 19 years? I'd say that's enough time to wait for one of the most eagerly awaited story developments in comic book history. What say you all! 8)

Thank you for the review, Colin.

The Treasure of the Mother of Mountains started off as a four issue story, then grew to six, and is now going to finish off as a seven issue story arc.

Tomoe is the lead character in the arc, and she'll really take a beating.

Now now Todd, yer not allowed to maul the Sensei...even thou he's hinted at mauling poor Tomoe...at least not until he's done with the book ^_^

I'll accept the fact that Tomoe gets beaten up fairly bad if it somehow results in the furthering (or initiation?) of her romance with Usagi. She did get broken down pretty badly in DBC, so I am not worried about her taking more abuse. She's a tough gal and can handle it. Hopefully Usagi will be there again to exact revenge on whoever it is that causes this!!

As for the Noriko and Tomoe flight..I'm sure there more to come.
I also enjoyed the political politics in the house of Noriyuki...i also don't trust Lord Horikawa...he has to working with Lord Sanada on getting his hands on more lands for Noriyuki.....
my favorite page this time around, page 18

Sweet.

I can't wait for this one to play out.

My favourite part of that issue was when Tomoe was on her way to the infected village. The page where she showed her credentials to the border guards. They bowed and she moved on. It was a simple scene, actually quite superfluous in a way. But that little slice of mundane action just thrills me. It shows that Stan is thinking of things beyond the primary points of plot movement.
