Some questions for Mr. Sakai.

Post by Shishio »

I've read a number of interview segments courtesy of the FAQs on this site, and I was just curious about some things.

From these segments it's clear you have a big interest in chambara films, and I know you've seen the Lone Wolf and Cub movies, but I was wondering if you have ever read the manga or seen any of the T.V. series.

I'm also curious as to whether or not you have read Vagabond (A manga adaptation of Yoshikawa's novel Musashi.) by Inoue Takehiko, and Samurai Executioner by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima, the same geniuses that brought us Lone Wolf and Cub.

I hope I don't come of as some annoying otaku trying to push things on you, I just think you would really enjoy the things I mentioned. And hey, they might give you more ideas to use in Usagi.

I have seen a few episodes of the LW&C TV series. They follow the manga pretty closely.

Having Dark Horse as my publisher has a few benefits. One of them is being on the comp list, so I was sent the entire run of LW&C as they were being released. I'm also sent the Samurai Executioner series, but have yet to read any of them because I just don't have the time and there are so many more books that I want to read.

I have been picking up Vagabond from Gary's Bookstore, but have yet to read any of them--same reason as above.

I'm currently reading The Lone Samurai, a book about Musashi going even beyond his duel with Kojiro. This one's less romanticized than Eiji Yoshikawa's book on which most Musashi stories are based.

It's really cool that Dark Horse sends you manga for free. Do they send their employees everything they publish, or only titles that they would be interested in?

I'm sure you'll love them when you finally have time to read them.

I take it from what you said about Lone Samurai that Musashi ends after the duel with Kojiro?

(Sadly, I have not read Musashi as of yet... When it was first published, it was released as a 5 book series, but I have only been able to find books 2 and 3 from the series.)

Their general comp list, on which I listed, just includes the comic. But, I requested some specialty items such as LW&C, Samurai Executioner, and Little Lulu.

Yoshikawa's Musashi ends soon after his duel with Kojiro, so does not go into philosophical period, his adopted son, or his days as a hermit. I bought Musashi in hardcover when it was published in the US. It's harder for me to keep track of the five paperback volumes.
