Yup....I really appreciate the free feeling of Stan Sakai's artwork ...

The hatching and line work seem laid down so casually ....Yet the construction and design are so solid...especially the backgrounds....

I would love to be able to draw so freelyin ink....But like the link said "Years of Practice"!

I am ingnorant of Mr. Sakai's process....Are the drawings roughed out in pencil - or just drawn directly with ink?

As with almost all comic book artists, the drawings are first penciled. The pencils are not as tight as when I first stared, though. The only artists I know of who sometimes did not pencil are Joe Kubert and the late Alfredo Alcala.

For a look at my entire creative process, see my interview in Amazing Heroes # 143 (?), reprinted in The Art of UY#1 from Radio Comix and The Art of UY book.

Thank you for the reply Stan....

It's great to be able to hear directly from artists that you admire...Thanks for taking the time to post.
