Questions: "The Duel" is that Gary from Gary comic

Post by Maka »

Hello Mr. Sakai,

In UY #26 (Fantagraphics Books) the money booker looks (to me) like Gary from Gary's comics. Was he your model?

That story (The Duel) is just heartbreaking. Great storytelling. Thanks!

Peace,

Yes, that is Gary Nishimura. In the story, that character owns the corner book store. Unfortunately, Gary had to give up The Corner Book Store when the property was sold.

Yes, but the memory lives on at the UYD...

And Gary still operates his bookstore, although now it is underground. Actually it's more like in his garage...

Now all we need is a guy similar in appearance to the bookstore owner who makes custom silkscreened kimonos for a local dojo....

It's more like a little club house in the back yard, but it is as cluttered as the other store. It doesn't have electricity, so you have to use a flashlight to see what is new on the stands each week.

Gary is even lower tech than I am. He still does not have internet access. He doesn't even have an telephone answering machine.

But I still go to him for my comic books.

Yeah I remember he was using a rotary type telephone at the shop... tell me he's at least gone to touch-tone!

Funny about using the flashlight to see what's new each week
