the Usagi Yojimbo Zone at Dark Horse Comics wrote:Usagi Yojimbo #93
By: Stan Sakai
Cover Artist: Stan Sakai
Genre: Action/Adventure

World-renowned storyteller Stan Sakai explores a very important part of Japanese culture in this special issue of Usagi Yojimbo. After an eventful stay, the time has come for Usagi to continue his wandering travels and bid farewell to the Geishu Province. Before he goes, he and Tomoe will first partake in the chanoyu-the formal tea ceremony. But is there something besides tea brewing between the two of them? Meanwhile, unbeknownst to either of the pair, arrangements are being made for Tomoe's marriage.

This unusual issue explores the stylized, spiritual event of the tea ceremony, which epitomizes the feeling of Zen. Sakai's attention to the historical details of Usagi's feudal environment is a hallmark of the series, and this focus is highlighted this month in "Chanoyu"!

Wow.

That looks just beautiful. I love storytelling that doesn't require words. Everything is so calm in those art pages.

I've participated in a few tea cermonies (my auntie in Hawaii is really into it). But I have trouble sitting that long. The UY issues that tell us more about traditions, arts, and culture are my favorite. I can't wait to read this issue.

At least I haven't picked up issue 92 yet. That will hold me over. :)

Peace,

maka

Wow...

I haven't seen Tomoe in a kimono and not wearing her swords...you know looking like a woman...ever.

Wow...

Those panels are the most detailed work I've seen Stan do in years.

Wow...

You just know something bad is going to happen.

Wow...

Then you haven't seen UY Color Special #1, "Tomoe's Story". Or this gem...

And you're right about the detail in these 4 panels...more than the usual amount. Stan spent some time on this one...and that's got me even more worried... This issue has "Eisner" written all over it....

Oh yeah the colour special...forgot about that issue. But still it has been a long time since then. And I don't think Usagi has ever seen her all decked out.

I'd give Stan an "Eisner" simply for the cover art.

I wonder if we'll go through the entire comic without speaking a word. Nah, that's impossible... or is it?! ;)

Roll on the end of April when I'll probably be able to get my hands on it (and issues #91 and #92 at the same time).

Tomoe will be the only one to speak..."Tono has arranged a marriage for me with so-and-so..."

What could Usagi possibly say after hearing that?

Man, I am just catching up! ON Saturday I finally got 91 and 92-- I was soo into the drama of 91 that the last panel caused me to laugh outloud-- it was like a punchline!

Poor Tomoe!

I wonder if she would have found out by this issue...and if Usagi ever finds out.

I want to see this one so much; this could be the last time they see each other again! TT_TT

Wouldn't it be counterproductive for Usagi and Tomoe to participate in the Chanoyu ceremony together?

Joking aside, all I can say about this issue is that I can't wait for it. Of course, that's about all I can say about every upcoming issue. Hooray for generic fanboy bleating.

That's why we're here, Shishio, and that's the best part about being a fanboy. To heap an unhealthy amount of praise on a fictional character. Gotta love it.

How true...
