Grey Shadows, signed, but no number?

I have a hardbound copy of Grey Shadows that is signed by Stan himself, but in the area where it says the number, there is just a blank space. It reads, "This is number ___ of 400 copies of the hardcover edition..." So what does that mean?

That's probably and "extra" or "beyond edition" book. Generally, they print more than the required number of books in case of damage or other mishaps. Also, I sign more than the required number of signature plates for the same reason. You just got one of those books that were beyond the edition.

Grey Shadows was an edition of 400 but there were at least 450 printed--the overprints were used for Artist Proofs and Publishers Proofs. What left overs were damaged or beyond editions. The beyond editions usually have a slash or something where the number should be, though. I don't think they're valued any higher or any lower than those books that are within the edition.

Or, most likely, someone just forgot to write in a number.
