Dark Horse 20 Years 25¢ Special

I bought a copy of this comic / pin-up book today and have to admit that it has some great drawings by two of my favorite artists. I thought it was worth a lot more than the quarter I paid for it.

Sergio Aragones' illustration, beautifully colored by Tom Luth, of Conan is just classic. Makes me wish the Groo / Conan cross-over would hurry up and get finished, and with all the artwork done by Sergio! (I'm not sure what the actual plans for the cross-over are for the actual artwork).

Stan's illustration for Sin City is just fantastic! Reminds me that I've wanted to ask if he ever previously contributed a pin-up to Frank Millers Sin City series before (I know Sergio did a pin-up for one of the books). How come Tom colored Sergio's illustration but he didn't color Stan's?

Paul Chadwick's Groo is neat, but very few people can capture Sergio's facial expressions.

Frank Millers Usagi illustration is a reprint of the Dark Horse Maverick cover he did. It would have been cool to have had a new illustration from him for the occassion. :?

If you haven't already bought one, better get one before they are al gone....

I really liked this book but was really disappointed that Dark Horse recycled the Miller cover again. As far as I know, all the other images were new so why'd Usagi get sidelined like that??

I agree. I love the book but was hoping for a new Usagi pic. I love seeing other artists interpretation of Usagi.
I LOVED Stan's pic though.
The whole book was nice.

Hello Ya'll,

I got a copy (okay I got 4 copies. Guilty) today. I love how Dark Horse rewards the fans with a cheap pin up issue to celebrate.

I have a different take on the Frank Miller being recycled. For many comic buyers may not even pick up UY monthy. But Frank Miller is a comic legend with his runs on daredevil, The Dark Knight Returns, and now high profile Sin City. So while it's a reprint for us hard core UY fans, the typical comic reader probably didn't shell out $40 for the Art of UY. It's new to them.

And since it's Frank Miller . . . it adds more "credibility" to UY, the character. I know, as fans, we know UY is the best the comic being produced in the past 22 years. We know it doesn't need "credibility." But any exposure is good for the comic and a tribute from Frank Miller is an honor. If it draws others to try out UY, bonus.

Plus, this pin up is in color, where it was in B&W in the art of UY. So it's kinda a unique piece.

In any case, awesome comic!!!!!!!!

Peace,

maka

On top of that, he gave me the original art.

Hopefully, Frank will take part in the UY #100 issue. Even I do not know what's going on with that. It's Diana's project. I'm coming in after everyone else's work is done.

Uhm, not exactly. The Frank Miller UY first appeared as the cover of Dark Horse Maverick 2001. In color. And then the b&w showed up in the Art of UY. And now here. So you see how DH is getting it's mileage out of this piece...

Except that Dan wrote the stories that appeared in the Nocturnals book (I drew one of them). I have not idea what the other artists are up to.

Am I going to see you in France? I hope so. I will bring a DH Special for you, and a few other things not available there.
