I was randomly looking through the Wikipedia like 5 minutes ago, and I typed Usagi.

the things that turned up were:

Usagi (兎, Usagi?) is the Japanese word for rabbit.

Usagi may also refer to:

* Usagi Miyamoto, title character of the manga Usagi Yojimbo.
* Usagi Tsukino from Sailor Moon.
* Nova (eikaiwa) is famous for having an usagi as its mascot.

Is Usagi Yojimbo really considered manga?

'Till next time

Um, no, it's an American comic book, indeed. But, considering its subject, it can be mistaken for a manga, though it graphically and narratively doesn't look like - even remotely - like a manga.

In France, the small format used by Éditions Paquet adds to the confusion, and the bookstores almost always class Usagi Yojimbo as a seinen manga.

Manga is the Japanese word for comics. Saying Usagi isn't manga is equivalent to saying it's not a comic.

but the wikipedia is in english, is it not?

oh, and speaking of other names for comics, I particularly enjoy "Graphic novel" and "Sequential art"

verily.

No, that's wrong. Mangas, comic books, bandes dessinées have many things in common, but not to the point of saying "manga" and "comic" are strictly equivalent terms.

But mangas have many graphic, esthetical, narrative specificities, peculiar clichés which clearly distinguish them among the vast family of sequential art.

This article, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manga, has a good "Characteristics" section which shows all these special features that you won't find in Usagi Yojimbo - not all of them, at least.

Nevertheless, I recognize that some mangas - like those of Jirô Taniguchi, for instance - may not look so "typical".

Conversely, aping the mangaka and their gimmicks has become very fashionable recently in Occident. But Mr. Sakai doesn't, and it's so much better this way.

Oops, sorry!

I was in a hurry and just through up the first handful that popped up on a google search. :(

Some of those pages (not yours) sure are in need of some work!

Maybe there is some confusion because Mr. Sakai frequents anime/manga cons...?

Outside of Japan, "manga" is a term used to describe comics originally developed and published by Japanese comic book companies. So therefore, UY is not manga, because it is an American comic book. The fact that it deals with Japanese situations and that it is written and drawn by a Japanese creator do not automatically make it manga. It is first and foremost an anthropomorphic (furry) comic. Stan has never referred to his comic as "manga", not ever. It's fun to compare it to manga, even for some publishers to package it up in manga-sized editions, but the bottom line is that Usagi is not manga. And no, Usagi's appearances in the TMNT cartoon do not make those episodes Anime :)

I actually think it's origin is Latin, but it now has an Anglo-American spelling....
