I was reading the letters column of issue #60 and Stan stated that he had discussed the outcome of the duel in the "Usagi" website but I cannot find any of the discussions here. He had stated that there were 4 possible outcomes of the duel and why he chose the one that he did.
I would have preferred to have had Koji live since he was such an awesome character. It is pretty nice to know that his swords were passed down to Jotaro so that a piece of him will still live through Jotaro.
Was it taken out or can anyone help me in finding that thread?

I did not have any luck with the brief search I tried, but I can provide you with the address for the archives for the older forum messages if you want to try searching them. It is a lot more manual of a search.

Wowzers. Can you imagine the different path USAGI YOJIMBO might have taken if Koji had killed Katsuichi?
Or what if Katsuichi and Koji had killed each other? That would have been a brutal blow for Usagi, not to mention a potential indictment of samurai beliefs (something Usagi himself almost admitted when he confronted Koji at the waterfall just before the duel). Two good men would have essentially slaughtered each other in the name of "honor". Most readers probably wouldn't have seen any honor. They would have only seen a horrible waste of life, and I'm not sure if I'd entirely disagree with them.
Please understand that I'm not trying to implant messages into the story that weren't there. I'm only interpreting it according to how I personally feel about the complicated issues the story tackled.

I think I discussed the various possible outcomes on the Dojo after that issue came out.
I did not know the outcome myself until I was drawing that page: Katsuichi could have killed Koji, Koji could have killed Katsuichi, they could have killed each other, or both could have seen the futility of the duel and called it off.
That was just one of two times that I sent in the art with instructions for Diana to read it right away, and get back to me asap.

I'm just re-reading all UY stories and have been curious, when I spotted Stan's note at the end of #61.
