General discussion about Usagi Yojimbo, the comics, the stories, the characters, collectibles, TV appearances, Stan Sakai, Space Usagi, Nilson & Hermy, and all other related topics.
Just a wild idea for a spin off... Usagi Yojimbo seems to take place around the beginnings of Edo-jidai, which works great for his character. What I would love to see is some kind of spin off to a later period in japanese history... perhaps meiji jidai, during the rapid modernization of Japan. I would love to see a descendant of Usagi rub shoulders with saigo, perry, and even throw in a little shinsengumi action in there for fun... ok.. lots of shinsengumi action
I've identified Usagi with 17th century Japan so much, I'm not sure if I could make the leap to another era. SPACE USAGI was so far removed from the original Usagi's period I didn't really have a problem with it, but something set during a more recent century might be too jarring.
Besides, I think Stan's got enough on his plate with the regular series to get wrapped up in a spin-off at the moment.
If there was a Usagi descendent in the Meiji Restoration time, the fun question would be to contemplate which of the sides he would have been on?
Would he have joined the Imperialists or been in favor of keeping the Shogun in power? Or one of those shifting sides in between?
That was such a complex time, it's a bit like the US Civil War in that you've got what appears to be the two sides to the conflict, but the reality was a lot more complex.
And I'd agree, Stan certainly is keeping us very entertained with the current storyline!
granted the current story line is wonderful... but with space usagi, smack talking ninja turtles from new york, and now invaders from space... anything could be around the corner
Not so much a spin off... but I'd love to see a future story arc (or even a single issue) where some how Usagi, in a vision or something, can see Jotaro working for Lord Noriyuki, as his head Yojimbo, or something. Kind of replacing Tomoe, not that I want her to leave her position, but, well, you know...
It was kind hinted that Jotaro may work for Noriyuki in the future, wasn't it?
Heh. What can I say? I love little Jotaro!
And, I'd love to see him with a top-knot, hehe!
I had plotted out a story involving one of Usagi's 20th (or now 21st) century descendants. Terri Miyamoto is an Japanese-American investigative reporter. Ten Little Critters has her, and nine other reporters, on an island and one of them is a murderer. It's definitely inspired by Dame Agatha. It was partially serialized in the fan magazine, Rowrbrazzle.
The art was very rough, definitely not intended for a professional publication without major revisions.
Maybe I'll reprint it in one of my UY Sketchbooks.
Speaking of spinoffs, I recently came across two of the old Color Specials. They gave me my first taste of Space Usagi and (though, not technically a spin-off) Nilson Groundthumper and Hermey. Both were quite enjoyable!
