Ok, so Im pumped about the Motor City Comic Con.

So, how does one go about buying artwork from Stan? Does he have a bunch of pieces with him that he sells? I know he doesnt sell contents of the comic, but does he sell covers? What else does he sell?

Im really excited about it. My wife laughed at me when I blurted out 'NOVI' at supper today.

At MegaCon he brought a portfolio of finished ink drawings (mostly unpublished although I lucked out and got the art for the Dark Horse "closed" sign), and also an unbound stack of cover art. The portfolio stuff ranged from around $85 to $125 (don't quote me, I might be misremembering and Stan can ask for whatever he wants!), and the covers about 7 or 8 times that. All beautiful work, of course.

(I hope it wasn't gauche of me to quote prices but I wanted Mike to be able to budget for his purchase)

Mr. Sakai does sell covers.

He also sells UY convention art that is usually (always?) inked. Very nice stuff.

When I bought art from him in 2004 he even had a water color piece for sale.

He had a UY page that wasn't used in the comic.

You can also PM Mr. Sakai and see if he has time to do a commissioned piece for you.

Often Mr. Sakai will post a message to this board on what to bring. In the past he has brought Limited edition GN, individual comics, full sets of comic runs, posters, etc.

I managed to get in a request for my desired piece of artwork, and now I need to make sure it survives the convention and the trip home unharmed.

Any suggestions on the best way to transport original art? If I am not mistaken, Stan's artwork is done on 11.5 X 17 Bristol. So, is there a recommended way to protect the artwork from damage while at the convention as well as in transit?

I bought three pages of Hellboy from Mike Mignola a couple of SDCC'ds ago and I brought a thing which has served me well a few times for the purpose of transporting original comic art. It's a pair of hard thin board pieces slightly larger than a standard comic page, hinged with duct tape that fits into my suitcase. I think the board is some kind of composite like medite but it's very strong. It was sent to me from Denmark as packaging for my first comic art purchase ( a Guy Davis BPRD cover). I just use a bulldog clip to clamp the pieces together and nothing moves. I'm sure you could cobble yourself something comparable tho' out of redily available materials. I don't like the idea of rolling original art myself, but tubes are always a possibility as well.

There's always a dealer at cons that sells protective plastic slipcovers for stuff like this. If you don't bring something I'm sure you'll be able to buy something else to protect the art.

When I sell originals, I usually give them in a plastic bag or sleeve. The best way for you to transport it, is to carry it in a portfolio or between two pieces of hinged chip board like what Fanfan showed. You can make your own if you have the time and inclination.

I'll post a "what should I bring" thread as we get closer to Motor City Con time.
