Original Stan Sakai

Post by camrex »

Does anyone know how I can get at least one original Stan Sakai art of Usagi? I know that there is some on eBay, but I am also aware of the modifications and forgeries there also. I'm just looking for something that I could buy and display on my home office wall.

Any ideas for a safe purchase of this type of art. One other thing, I am someone of modest means.

I've been following Usagi for many, many years now. Unfortunately, I have not had the pleasure of being able to meet him. Hopefully, he will come to my part of the country some day. :D

Thank you for your assistance.

Hello,
and welcome to the forum, camrex (Robert).

This is something I wrote for another member; seems the question arises every now and again (no offence meant  )

Well, my first guess would be to contact Stan Sakai himself, especially if you've got something specific in mind; As far as I understood, the best way to actually acquire the piece would be a Convention or any other of Sensei's appearances. But these mere details could be discussed with Sensei himself.

Waiting for an ebay auction might seem another option, with several disadvantages:
1.The art has traveled through several hands, so the price went up alongside. Cut out the middle man, I'd say.
2.You can't be really sure about the condition your piece arrives in (images might not show every flaw, postal service may pose a threat in itself).
3.The supply on ebay is limited to what other people are willing to part with, which is not necessarily what you'd like to have.
4.But the major disadvantage is that you miss a chance to meet Sensei, thus giving the purchased art an extra story to tell envious friends

There may be some original art around in some comic shops, but I doubt it.

Good luck finding your piece of art

Edit: Contacting Sensei should be simple through this forum; believe me, he's a really nice person. But keep in mind that he might be busy....what with drawing all these comics, original art.... oh, and traveling...not to forget his family...
Greetings from overseas

Orignal Stan Sakai

Thank you for your response. I guess that I should have read much further into the forum before posting my question.

FAQs says that the best way to contact Stan is through his editor at Dark Horse or through the forum. So... I guess I'll try through his editor.

I'd like to meet Stan through the Conventions, but the only Conventions that I see that he attends are either in Ohio, but the big one in San Diego. Unfortunately, attending the San Diego Convention is not option for me. :(

If you want a signed copy, Heritage Source is a good place to order it from. She does mail order to anywhere in the world.

Unfortunately, the signed & numbered hard cover won't be out in time for the event.
You could try contacting Stan by PM through this forum and see if some type of arrangement can be made to purchase a piece of original art through Carolyn of Heritage Source Bookstore. Just a possibility. :D

Except for very few exceptions, I do not sell art or anything through the mail. I do not have the time or inclination.

Unfortunately, the best way to acquire art from me is at a convention or book signing. I always have plans to travel somewhere, and usually post my schedule on the Boards. I've been to Dallas and Houston a number of times for signings even back when the old Dallas Fantasy Fairs were in business in the 80's. The last time, though, was about 5 years ago for a comic book convention, and a year before that for an anime con.

I appreciate your response. I hope that you will come to one of the conventions in the Texas area some time in the future and that I may catch you at that time. I'll keep a close look out for your schedule.

In the meantime, I'll try some of the other suggestions that have be made.

Thank you again.

My suggestion would be: find a friend, or a friend of a friend who is going to San Diego, give them $100, and tell them "Bring me back a good sketch of Usagi from Stan Sakai's table". He usually has several dozen pre-made sketches to sell at this large convention, with prices ranging from $80-$200, I'm sure you could get a very nice one for that $100. Good luck in your hunt.

I appreciate the idea. Now I just need to find someone going to San Diego when Stan's going to be there. But it is a good idea.

Thanks !!

I will be going to SD, and I have helped people out in previous years with posters, sketchbooks, and other signed items.

Send me a PM and let's see how I can maybe help you out.
