What's the ideal age to read comic books?

Post by goandal »

I was a late UY reader at 13, but I've wondered what's the appropriate age for kids to start reading comic books?

Let's also consider content of certain comic books.

I want to start reading with my niece.

I started reading comics around 9 or 8? Read mostly Disney comics like Goofy, Mickey Mouse and some Archie comics. Some Batman and Superman occasionally.
I didnt start collecting comics until I was 12 and moved to a new neighbourhood. Back then it was all about Hulk and Daredevil and G.I Joe and Transformers. :)

I started reading comics at about 6 or 7. I still read them today. An ideal age? I'm not sure there is :)

I started reading comics to my children as soon as they were old enough to sit still for them -- about 5 or so. I started buying the DC animated comics for them as soon as they were old enough to not rip them to shreds, and Usagi paperbacks when they got a little older.

Maybe around the age of 5-10, the best to start out is with Disney comics?

Begin with the cutesy stuff and as the child gets a better grasp of the world, then bring in UY? UY brings in a lot of culture awareness, bravery and respect to your fellow man.

Yeah, I don't think there is an "ideal age"...but you can definitely start as soon as you're able to read. These days most comic companies will have age recommendations on the cover, but as many have already said - starting off with Disney or other cartoon comics is probably the easiest....

I don't want to lump Usagi in that...but Usagi isn't very difficult to read. There are concepts that would be difficult for a child to grasp...but understanding of the story as a whole can be done be a child. (which of course is the beauty of Stan's work :D
