USAGI PRINT 1986?

Post by MIGHTYDUKE »

I BOUGHT A USAGI PRINT OFF EBAY YEARS AGO THAT IS SIGNED & NUMBERED LIMITED TO 50. I WAS WONDERING IF IT IS LEGIT. IT IS SIGNED IN PENCIL & MOST OF THE PRINT IS THE SKY WITH COULDS WITH USAGI WALKING THRU A FEILD. IT LOOKS TO BE HAND COLORED.
ANY INFO WOULD BE GRAET!
THANKS FOR YOU TIME EARL

I would say it's legit. And I think I know which one this is. Back in the mid/late 80's Stan had a few limited edition b&w prints of Usagi. One of these was the first page from "A Quiet Meal", from Critters no. 6 (UY Book 1). It depicts Usagi wearing a hat and crossing a field. Sometimes Stan would team up with Tom Luth and make an even more limited edition version of the prints by having Tom color them (I think Tom even signed them too). I have a copy of the b&w version myself, as well as the cover from UY Vol 1 #13, first chapter of the Dragon Bellow saga. Both prints are ~11"x16". They were selling for $10 and the colored ones were $25. I wish I hadda snatched up some of the colored ones but back then I was about 14-15 years old and not exactly full o' money :-) See photos below...

I hand-colored those two prints myself, using water colors. I still have a few left somewhere.

I stand corrected! The reason I thought Tom colored them was because I remember one year at SDCC I got to watch Tom color one of the prints first hand. This was back when Stan, Tom, and Sergio used to all sit together at the same table, near Steve Gallacci and Phil Yeh. It must have been one of the 150 b&w edition prints that Tom was coloring.

It is a print made from the artwork from the first page of the ten page story "A Quiet Meal" which was published by Fantagraphics in issue #6 of Critters - Dec/1986 (Usagi Yojimbo Book 1 - Ronin). I have heard it described as the "dragonfly" print previously.

I have it as a black and White print (7/150). I can't remember if Stan commented before if he or Tom Luth did the colors for the colored version.

Edit: (Gee, turned my back for an instant and a bunch of messages appeared!)
Stan Sakai wrote: I published the print of page 1 of A Quiet Meal in, I think, 1989 as a black & white and a hand colored editions. I still have a few that I occassional bring down to San Diego whenever I come across them while packing.

Consider me interested in those prints (in either b/w or colour) if you come across any more before coming to Europe Stan :)

Btw said picture was the basis for the loading screen in the C64 version of the Usagi game...
