Stan Sakai (Japón, 1953) es otro de los decanos del cómic invitados estos días en Gijón. ´Padre´ del samurai Usagi Yojimbo, podría pensarse que su creación es auténticamente japonesa. Es así, pero su autor trabaja en Estados Unidos y considera impensable que este personaje, un clásico del mercado norteamericano desde hace tres décadas, pueda triunfar en el país del sol naciente.

"Ningún cómic occidental es suficientemente importante para que se publique allí", aseguró ayer Sakai en Gijón. La razón, explicó, es que se trata de un mercado muy cerrado y el siente que hay "cierto rechazo frente a un cómic de Estados Unidos". No sabe con certeza si ese sentimiento obedece a motivos políticos o a la saturación de creadores, que impide el paso a autores extranjeros.

Puede ser que el público tenga unos gustos diferentes de los occidentales, ya que "en Japón se asume que todo tipo de cómic de afuera es de superhéroes y allí eso no interesa". Como ejemplo añadió que en una ocasión se publicó allí una serie de Spiderman, pero no fue una simple traducción de las historietas originales, sino una trama completamente diseñada para los lectores japoneses.

Su pequeño samurai protagoniza aventuras en el Japón del siglo XVII. El personaje surgió por casualidad. Un día dibujó un conejo con las orejas atadas y le gustó tanto que decidió usarlo para una trama. A Sakai le parece estupendo usar animales para las historietas porque son símbolos universales. Así triunfó, por ejemplo, Mickey Mouse.

Atribuye su éxito, entre otras razones, a que escribe historias que a él le gustaría leer y asegura que su editorial le da carta blanca sin ningún tipo de restricciones para que cuente lo que le dé la gana. También es cierto que la única política que toca en sus historietas es la que atañe al Japón del siglo XVII.

It came up on a recent google blog search. I do not have an actual copy of the paper, but it would be pretty neat to get a copy it somehow.
