The Most Iconic Characters

Hello!
I have a question: in no particular order, who would you consider to be the twenty (or so) most iconic, influential, important, or just plain interesting characters in the series thus far? The first few fairly easy to pick - Usagi, Tomoe, Gen, Katsuichi, Jotaro, Jei - but after that it becomes open to much more debate.
Thoughts, anyone? This is for a project I'm working on. (I'll show it if I finish it - not much point otherwise.)

Steve's list is pretty comprehensive... I would sprinkle in the of the different ninja races though. Even though they aren't specific characters.

You have Lord Noriyuki twice on the list, I guess he's really pretty important! :p I guess we can swap one of them out for someone like Mariko.
PVC figures? Hah, I wish it were that cool. No, I might as well just say - the card game that I play, Legend of the Five Rings, has contests for 'best theme deck' and since it's based on samurai like Usagi is, I'm slowly working on an Usagi Yojimbo theme for it, with edited cards. These twenty people will be the twenty main people in the deck. (I'll try and get the non-ninja races in somewhere else).
Thanks a heap for your help! I hadn't even thought of some of these people, who are a lot better than my picks.
(And if anyone else wants to give their list anyway, it'd be interesting to see.)

Aw, man, I just copied the list of names from my PVC figurine wish-list which was posted a couple years ago, then added Lone Goat and Kid and the Lords (forgot lord Noriyuki was already listed) at the bottom.....
So yeah, Keniichi, Mariko, and Ikeda should be on the list, as well as Stray Dog.
Yagi and Gorogoro!!!

Katsuichi is the best character in UY series i think, the second place surely belongs to Sasuke

I realize this list was for something else, but good job, you got 11/14 (15 if you count Kiyoko, 16 if you count "random komori ninja") on the 25th anniversary poster. And I guess popular acclaim for Stray Dog was right and Mariko and Keniichi are "iconic" enough.
Makes me wonder how many characters would be on a "villians" poster. Hebi & Jei certainly, beyond that I'm not sure. There's probably more "iconic" dead characters at this point (even if you ignore dead villians). Could make for an interesting "series" of images.
