I will be a guest of the comics convention in Zagreb in early November. I will also be doing the festival poster and T-shirt design.

We'll have a contest or two with the shirts as prizes.

I have never been to Croatia, but have wanted to for a long time. When I was first approached to be a guest, I did so with the stipulation that I will get to visit Dubrovnik, a city along the Dalmatian Coast. The entire city center is designated a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Sounds like a place worth visiting. Can't wait to see your pictures!

Have any of the Dark horse volumes been translated and published in Croatia?

In other words, are there any volumes Steve is missing in his collection and is there a way to get his hands on them?

I don't think so. I was surprised that even the Fantagraphics volumes were still being published there.

1st of all I wish a welcome to mr. Sakai to Croatia in November.

Dubrovnik is kinda overrated, I think there are some other cities at the adriatic/dalmatian coast worth visting more. For those interested more about Croatia here's a link to recently awarded US documentary on Croatia:

And yes, only the Fantagraphics TPs are published here, 7 volumes in hard covers (from 2001-2006), and before that in mid. 90ies 2 issues of Usagi.

Yes, if I had more time, I would love to also visit Split and Brela, and the entire coast. Unfortunately, I am behind on my deadlines as it is.

Hey Elmo,
Any chance of getting more information on those two issues of Usagi from the mid-90's?
Thanks,
Steve

I've been trying to find out more details about those early releases on one of the Croatian comic forums, but all I've gotten so far is some cover scans.

And a cool tip about some Usagi stories published in a Garfield magazine which was also a nice bonus. :D

There was some Usagi Yojimbo released also in short lived Bookglobe's "Garfield Zabavnik" Magazine (besides Garfield and Bone) in 2004

2nd one is named "Usamljeni zec i djete" in Croatian ("Lone rabbit and child").

Issue #2 has the cover of Fantagraphics' issue #37 but it doesn't contain the same stories
as the american one. Tere are 3 stories inside: "Lovac na ucjene" ("Bounty hunter"),
"Konjokradica" ("Horse thief") and "Selo straha" ("Village of fear").

Editor and translator was the owner of the publishing house Bookglobe, Nebojiša Radić.

There are 7 books with hard covers published also by Bookglobe.
They're exact copies of Fantagraphics' TP editions so everything matches execpt for the
covers of books 2 and 3. Editors are Nebojiša Radić and Bernard Radovčič.

#1 (2001) - translated by Ozren Švarc
#2 (2001) - translated by Ozren Švarc
#3 (04/2003) - translated by Martin Babić
#4 (06/2004) - translated by Martin Babić
#5 (06/2005) - translated by Vuk Radić
#6 (06/2005) - translated by Vuk Radić
#7 (10/2006) - translated by Ivana Lieli

And as BiDi already mentioned there were few stories of Usagi in
"Garfield zabavnik" magazine:

#1 (06/2004)

No title in Croatian ("The goblin of Adachighara") - 8 pgs.
"Usamljeni zec i djete" ("Lone rabbit and child") - 20 pgs.

#2 (07/2004)

"Priznanje" ("The confession") - 15 pgs.

#3 (08/2004)

"Lovac na glave" ("Bounty hunter") - 10 pgs.
"Kradljivac konja" ("Horse thief") - 10 pgs.
